How to Get Free Fortnite Skins

This is how you can get free Fortnite skins and all of the outfits that have already been given away for free that you might have missed.

Fortnite has loads of rare skins and other cosmetics, it’s a key part of the game. Every season has players going over leaks to try and figure out what will be in the next Battle Pass. What if you’re looking for free Fortnite skins though? The game has a reputation for costly cosmetics. Fortnite free skins do exist though.

Free Fortnite skins have come in various events over the run of the game. There are also some you can pick up from being part of an outside platform for promotions. Then there are the free V-Bucks that Epic gives away! While most places that promise “free skins” are just trying to get access to your account, there have been plenty of ways to get free Fortnite skins direct from Epic themselves. You’ve just got to keep an eye out for them.

In this guide we’re going to run through all of the free Fortnite skins offered and how you could get them. Along with what to watch out for more in the future. And how long do you need to play before you can start getting free Battle Passes?

How to Get Free Fortnite Skins

Free Fortnite skins do exist. Although, they’re much, much, rarer than the ones you’ll find in the store. Ultimately Epic wants players to spend money on V-Bucks. That’s why they price everything to get you regularly buying more V-Bucks. However, every now and again though they give away something for free. If you play regularly, you can build yourself up an impressive locker of free Fortnite skins by paying proper attention.

There are a few different ways that Epic has given them out in the past. We’ll run through all of them here and what to watch out for future free skins.

Free Fortnite Skins from Events and Winter Wonderland

Fortnite Free Skins - Winterfest

Epic regularly holds events in-game. These come with quests, new content, and usually a whole lot of cosmetics. Most are paid for. However, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes part of a new event will be Epic giving out free Fortnite skins and in some cases more than one new skin. The most common event for free skins is the Winter update.

The Fortnite Winter Wonderland update usually comes with daily presents. Each one gives some kind of cosmetics like a back bling or banner. The final reward for most of these updates is the eventual free skin! Epic has routinely given away free cosmetics at New Year. They aren’t always the coolest skins, but they are free.

Last year’s Winter Wonderland saw a free Peely skin be awarded. One of Fortnite's most iconic characters. There was also a skin in the style of most “plain woman with the smallest possible hitbox” skins favourited by sweats.

A good way to get free Fortnite skins is to play during their winter event. You’ll have to make sure you log in regularly to open presents though. They tend to be the last ones! While they haven’t always given away free Fortnite skins, they are a common part of the celebration. While you can’t bank on it, it never hurts to check.

Free V-Bucks in Battle Pass

Fortnite Free Skins - Battle Pass

Every season Fortnite has a Battle Pass with two tiers. There’s the free tier and the paid tier. The paid or premium Battle Pass contains loads of skins and enough V-Bucks to buy the next Battle Pass. This one requires V-bucks to unlock. However, you also get free V-Bucks in the base tier.

Every season you’ll be awarded 300 V-bucks from progressing through the base tier of the game. This isn’t enough for free Fortnite skins. However, you can save these from season to season. If you complete each Battle Pass, you’ll eventually get enough for a skin or a Battle Pass.

Once you play through 3 and a bit seasons, you’re able to get a Battle Pass. This means you’ll have a steady flow of free skins provided you complete enough quests, and don’t buy anything from the shop in the meantime! 3 seasons isn’t the longest amount of time. If you’re playing regularly, you can quickly get onto the paid tier of Fortnite’s Battle Pass this way.

You can get a steady supply of the seasonal skins this way. You can’t splurge in the store, but you’ll get a decent number of free Fortnite skins every season.

Free Skins in Promotions

Fortnite Free Skins - Xander

Epic Games occasionally uses a Fortnite free skins as part of another promotion! These can be free Fortnite skins for playing a different game, being a part of a platform, or just getting a friend to play. Some of the past free Fortnite skins have come through these kinds of methods.

If you’re a subscriber to PSPlus, Twitch, or anything similar, it can be helpful to watch out for free loot. Fortnite free skins are given away at regular intervals for these programs. It isn’t just Fortnite. Games Pass and Xbox Live similarly do this, even for games like MultiVersus.

They also currently give away a Xander skin for completing the Refer a Friend quest. This is a more intensive questline that sees you introduce a friend to Fortnite and complete quests together. This is easiest to complete with a friend and a second account each. However, it is time-consuming.

Most recently, Epic has given anyway a free skin for opening up their games launcher to play Fortnite and clicking on the skin. Basically meaning everyone on PC got it really easy.

These are great ways to get a free Fortnite skin. Some of these require you to be part of a paid platform. If you’re signed up already though, it makes sense to keep an eye out for free skins to claim.

Past Free Fortnite Skins

Those are all of the main ways you can get free Fortnite skins. It might be surprising how often you can get yourself a free skin one though. These aren’t occasional promotions that you never see. There’s a fair number of them.

These are all of the past free Fortnite skins and how you could unlock them.

Free Fortnite Skins with PSPlus

Blizzard Bomber Skin

Fortnite Free Skins - Blizzard Bomber

This one was a skin used in 2022. It was unlocked by being a member of PS and redeeming it within that month. This one is the most recent PSPlus skin.

Fortnite Free Skins - Sultra

This one was another PS skin. It was available during March 2022 to users who remembered to claim it.

Refer a Friend Fortnite Free Skins

Xander Skin

Fortnite Free Skins - Refer a Friend

This one is similar to a past season’s skins. It was unlocked by completing the refer a friend scheme! Although, it probably got unlocked by a lot of players teaming up a friend to smurf the quests.

Rainbow Racer

Fortnite Free Skins - Rainbow Racer

This was another skin for refer-a-friend. This one was available up until January 2022. These refer-a-friend skins can be time-consuming. Even players who try to grab bonus rewards in the Battle Pass might not bother. This can make this one of the rarer free Fortnite skins.

Free With Epic Games Launcher

Guff Gringle

This skin was added to the game with the 2022 Winterfest. It arrived with a very similar free skin from the presents, but with a difference here. You had to grab it from using the Epic Games launcher. It was one of the easiest skins to unlock.

All players had to do was log in to the Epic Games Launcher and open Fortnite in the promotional month. That was it! This did look very similar to another free skin though, so it isn’t as much of a get compared to some other skins. It even came out in the same month as the other version, so pretty much everyone got a version of Guff whether they bothered with the Epic Games Launcher or not.

Free Skins from Challenges

Chrome Punk

Fortnite V22.30 Patch Notes - Chrome Punk

Chrome Punk is one of the more unique free Fortnite skins. He was only added towards the end of Chapter 3. He was free to every player! Amazingly all you had to do was complete some basic quests which you had months to get through anyway. To get Chrome Punk for free, all you needed to do was complete three layers of challenges.

These challenges were just to level up in accounts. You had to get around 50 levels in total. But with having multiple Seasons to get up there that wasn’t too hard. As long as players got through the opening section of a couple of Battle Passes they got this cool skin for free!

Fortnite Free Skins from Other Games

Major Mancake

Fortnite Free Skins - Major MancakeThis one was available during July 2022. It was accessible if you completed the Fortnite x Fall Guys Crown Clash Challenges. To do this you had to link your Epic Accounts in both games, and complete the questlines.

Assassin’s Creed Ezio Skin

Fortnite Free Skins - EzioThis one was included with orders of DLC for Assassin’s Creed. Only in the Epic’s Game Store though. It was later released as a regular store skin too. This is an odd one since it wasn’t exactly free. However, if you were playing Assassin’s Creed it was more of a bonus. This one likely sold better in the item shop than as a bonus for using the Epic Games Launcher for everything you do.

Free Skins from Tournaments

Fortnite Free Skins - Bruno MarsEpic regularly holds in-game tournaments to celebrate the release of notable new skins. Playing along with these is the ideal way of grabbing the skin. You will have to place very highly to unlock these skins. So we can’t count them fully as Fortnite free skins. Although, the top few players to compete in each region did manage it.

These are some of the skins you could have grabbed from a tournament:

  • Chica
  • Chloe Kim
  • Bruno Mars
  • Wonder Woman
  • Beast Boy
  • Aloy
  • Webster
  • The Flash
  • Dragon Ball Skins
  • Lazarbeam
  • Bugha

Tart Tycoon

Fortnite Free Skins - Tycoon TartThis is another skin that you could unlock by playing in a tournament, but it is a bit different. This one wasn’t a prize for just the top few players. All you had to do was grab 10 points in the free Fortnite Cup. This was a tournament held by Epic to coincide with their lawsuit with Apple over royalties, Fortnite might be gone from iPhones but a lot of people got a free skin!

This one was much easier for you to get than the other tournament skins. It’s not too common either. This might be because Epic didn’t communicate all that well and a lot of players probably didn’t know you could just wait in a single game for a short bit and get enough points.

Winter Wonderland Free Fortnite Skins

As mentioned above, Winter Wonderland is the main source of free skins in Fortnite! These are all of the Winter Wonderland skins that you could unlock in the last few years without paying.

Polar Peely

Fortnite Free Skins - Frozen PeelyThis skin was available as part of the Winter Wonderland questline! It’s a fun twist on one of Fortnite’s most iconic skins, Peely.

Fortnite Free Skins - KrisavelleThis one was part of 2022 Winterfest just like Polar Peely.

Fortnite Free Skins - BlizzabelleThis skin was released in January 2022, it came free if you logged into Fortnite with the Epic Games Launcher.

Fortnite Free Skins - SnowmandoThis was unlocked for completing the Operation Snowdown Challenge in 2022. These quests ran over Winter. They’re the same style of free Fortnite skins as Frozen Peely.

Frost Squad

Fortnite Free Skins - Frost SquadThis is another one from January 2021. It was unlocked by completing the Christmas quests.

Sled Ready Guff

This is one of the two skins that hit the game in Fortnite Winterfest 2022! It’s one of the first free skins of Chapter 4! As with the others, it was given away as part of Winterfest. Players opened presents every single day with two free skins sat the end as a big reward. You’ll see a lot of this skin in its initial season for the opening on Chapter 4, but less as we get further out from this Winterfest.

Arctic Adeline

This is the second free skin given away at Winterfest 2022. It’s got a more casual style than the others, and looks more like a traditional Sweat skin than specifically a Winterfest one. Players could have grabbed it for free pretty easily though, just picking out the right presents at the end of Winterfest.

New Free Fortnite Skins

Those are the most recent free Fortnite skins. If you wondering how you can get more, you’ll have to keep your eyes peeled. Watch out for events, tournaments, and more. Even keep an eye on the loot from platforms like Twitch, PSPlus, GamesPass, and more. If you’re particularly confident in your abilities you can even compete in pro tournaments to grab free versions of store skins. Although, if you’re placing that highly you might be better off on the actual pro events for pure cash instead!
