Tanks are more critical than ever in Overwatch 2. Competitive play can only be played in a 5v5 format instead of a 6v6 in competitive.
Knowing what Overwatch 2 heroes to pick is important if you want to climb the competitive leaderboard. Blizzard made some changes to it, but players have access to the same ranks as before. As a result, many of them check the Overwatch 2 hero tier list before deciding what to get.
We’ve already included a list of the best DPS and Support heroes, so check them out if you are interested in those roles. That said, this one is dedicated to tanks, so let’s check some of the hottest options. Unsurprisingly, the heroes you will see below work well in the lower ranks, but this doesn’t mean you can’t use them in the higher ones.
Zarya
The first name on the list when it comes down to tanks you should go for is Zarya. She has always been a fantastic option in competitive play because of her damage potential. Needless to say, this is also true in Overwatch 2, where the hero is ripping through his enemies.
The fact that there aren’t that many shields in the game allows heroes like Zarya to do way more damage. Her bubbles give her the ability to do more damage even than a DPS because most people try going through it instead of switching their targets. In other words, they allow the hero to do even more.
Zarya received several notable Overwatch 2 changes. For starters, her base health and shield have been increased, allowing the hero to be tankier than before. Her two bubbles now share a 10-second cooldown and have 2 charges. Even though you can’t use the Projected Barrier on the same ally for 2 seconds after applying it, the barrier itself lasts for 2.5s instead of 2s. Unsurprisingly, this makes Zarya much stronger.
Zarya can easily deal with all the other tanks in the game. She is solid against D.va and Junker Queen, which is one of the reasons why many people go for the hero.
Orisa
There is no arguing that the new Orisa in Overwatch 2 is one of the best all-around heroes in the game right now. Besides being way more fun to play, Orisa is capable of doing some serious damage. That’s one of the big reasons why it is the go-to option for many players.
As mentioned, many Overwatch 2 changes regarding Orisa made it a completely different hero. Even though it lost its shield and damage-boost ultimate, the hero has the ability to do damage and stun, deflect shots while pushing enemies away, and do tons of damage with the new Ultimate.
Orisa is one of the heroes in Overwatch 2 that can destroy the enemy team if people don’t take action. The spear might not do that much damage, but it can interrupt certain abilities. This allows Orisa to be extremely strong versus other tanks.
Another thing that people should know is that Orisa can easily do insane amounts of damage with her regular standard fire. The new mechanics added the overheating mechanism, but using Fortify allows the hero to fire for much longer than usual.
Sigma
As mentioned, Overwatch 2 has a couple of changes compared to the previous game that made it much more enjoyable. One of them is removing and nerf most barriers in the game. That’s one of the reasons why Sigma is actually one of the best tanks you can play if you want to reach your desired Overwatch 2 competitive rank.
The only problem with Sigma is that the hero is not easy to master. It will take some time to get used to him and his mechanics. However, once you learn how he works, you can easily tank tons of damage and use your barrier to block certain abilities.
The hero’s barrier's regeneration rate is down from 120 to 100. Besides that, the hero now has 200 base shield HP instead of 100, and his accretion ability deals 100 damage instead of 70.
Despite the nerf to his barrier, people who know how to use the hero, and this ability can make a huge difference. A well-placed barrier can make heroes like Widowmaker feel useless.
D.Va
One of the most popular Overwatch tanks is also extremely strong in Overwatch 2, no matter your current skill bracket. In fact, if you watch some of the top-tier Overwatch 2 streamers and players, you can see that D.Va is present in almost every game. This is a clear sign that the hero is powerful right now.
Unlike other tanks with barriers, D.Va’s shield is the same as before. What’s not the same is the hero’s HP. She also deals more damage, and her micro missiles have 1 second less cooldown than before. All those things add up and make her one of the best Overwatch 2 tanks to climb in competitive with.
One of the things you have to learn if you decide to play with this hero is how to position yourself. Due to this tank’s aggressive nature can play more offensively than needed, resulting in an easy kill. Don’t forget that D.Va has a huge hitbox, meaning many DPS can kill her fast and get their ults charged.
