ESTNN explains which NPCs upgrade weapons in Fortnite Chapter 2 – Season 6.
Weapon upgrades have become a focal point in Fortnite Battle Royale from a public and competitive match perspective. One player's chances of winning a fight with an Epic Pump Shotgun versus a Rare Pump Shotgun are infinitely greater. For that reason and many others, there's nothing more valuable than knowing how and where to upgrade weapons. Although there are technically two ways to upgrade, we will ignore the crafting method as we have already compiled a guide on how it works. Instead, we'll focus on using gold via non-player characters (NPCs).
How to Upgrade Weapons with Gold
Gold is one of a few resources in Fortnite that carried over from Season 5 to Season 6. Players can earn gold by completing quests, eliminating other players and breaking down structures such as beds. Your accumulated gold bars remain with you from game to game, so being conscious of that is crucial. This form of currency allows players to purchase and upgrade weapons and items. Let's look at some critical NPCs located around the Season 6 map that will upgrade weapons for gold.

Where to Find NPCs that Offer Upgrades
Only five known characters currently offer weapon upgrades in exchange for gold. To do so, you can walk up to the NPC, initiate a dialogue and then find the correct option for upgrading. Here is a complete list of those characters and where to find them:
- The Reaper – Crashed Cargo (West of Sweaty Sands)
- Jonesy – Pleasant Park
- Remedy – Craggy Cliffs
- Bandolette – Flush Factory (Southeast of Slurpy Swamp)
- Jules – Camp Cod (Southeast of Misty Meadows)
- Dummy – Compact Cars (West of Dirty Docks)

These are the NPCs you'll want to visit for a convenient weapon upgrade. More opportunities may arise as the Epic begins rolling out updates. If last season is any indicator, we should see more characters appear on the map down the line. Here's a quick refresher of how much gold NPCs require to upgrade:
- Common to Uncommon – 50 gold bars
- Uncommon to Rare – 150 gold bars
- Rare to Epic – 250 gold bars
- Epic to Legendary – 350 gold bars
Stacking bars from match to match is an intelligent strategy to rely on this season, given the uncertainty around some new weapons. Finding just one Uncommon Pump Shotgun or Assault Rifle increases your chance of achieving the Victory Royale because of the upgrading option. It would be wise to memorize these NPCs spawns so that you can dominate.
