There is loads of fun content in the gameplay like all of the Baldur’s Gate 3 classes, but one area has captured a lot of attention prior to release. The Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options have been shown off ahead of release, including some particularly crazy matchups.

Baldur’s Gate 3 romance choices look crazy compared to other titles around right now. The clip that got everyone excited about the possibilities in the game so far has been the protagonist getting hot and heavy with a bear (well, a druid disguised as a bear) but what about the more normal options? These are all of the Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options and how it all works in-game.

So far, through the early access of the game we’ve had a decent look at how romance works. The system for romanceable characters in Baldur’s Gate doesn’t seem to be changing, we’re just getting more expansive options. This is how you can go ahead and romance another character, with every option in the title so far.

Does Baldur’s Gate 3 Have Romance?

Baldur’s Gate 3 has romance as a possible option for interaction with companions. There isn’t a superscripted single romance like FF 16’s choices, instead, it’s about player choice. A lot of different companions are available as Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options.

Any of these characters can be taken to the interaction level where things get romantic. You can form deeper relationships and even get physical with them. To go down one of the romance options paths though, you’ll have to first progress your relationship with that character. This is how you can do all of that.

How to Start Romance with Characters in Baldur’s Gate 3

Your companions in-game each have unique opinions and connections to you. These will form based on how you're interacting with the game. Your dialogue choices and actions in-game will lead to their opinions developing, along with taking the factions you chose into account too. There are limitations to which Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options you can use depending on how you play the game. Different romanceable characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 have different expectations of you.

Getting started with a romance option begins with their opinion of you, it needs to be positive before they’ll even think about taking it further.

Getting a Positive Opinion with Romanceable Characters in Baldur’s Gate 3

To start choosing one of the Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options you need to get your targeted companion to have a good opinion of you. There are different ways to do this depending on which companion you’re going for. It’s the same system for everyone though.

Essentially, you’ll need to think about their agenda for your actions in-game. Chose actions and dialogue choices which fit with their character and goals, and then they’ll grow a positive opinion of you. You can also help by talking to them frequently in a way that builds your connection. Characters all have different Agendas in game, but each of the Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options have agendas you can follow specifically and tailor your actions around.

Progressing to Romance

Once you’ve got a positive opinion with your target companion, next you need to actually start up a romance. This is best to do at Camp while you’re resting. Here, you’re able to interact with the romanceable characters in Baldur’s Gate 3 and have deeper conversations. Once you’ve got a close enough connection, you’ll start to see romantic dialogue. Go through the romance conversation successfully and you’ll get even more possibilities. Including dialogue choices that will lead to the relationship going up to the next level.

That’s how romance in Baldur’s Gate 3 works and how to get to that level. What exactly are your options for romanceable characters though? There’s more than you might expect. These are the characters we know you can romance in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Astarion

Asrtarion is a high-elf rogue and kind of a vampire. You can find at the Nautiloid shipwreck, on the southwest of roadside cliff. To actually romance him, you’ll need to take advantage of other players and generally not be very considerate about how anyone else feels. Being deceptive to get you ahead.

Make decisions that take your character down that dark path and Astarion will open up as one of the Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options.

Shadowheart

Shadowheart is a high half-elf, trickster domain cleric and one of the romanceable characters in Baldur’s Gate 3. You can find her in-game trapped near the Mind Flayer Nautiloid. Once freed, she’ll be at the entrance to the Dank Crypt at the northern end of the Ravaged Beach.

To get a positive relationship with Shadowheart, you’ll need to avoid conflict and seek out peaceful resolutions to problems. Great for those who enjoy pacifist runs. She has a rivalry with Lae’Zal you’ll need to keep in mind too.

Gale

Gale is a human wizard and one of the more normal Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options. He’s trying to become the greatest wizard. You can find him pretty quickly in the game, just after the prologue. So he’s one of the first characters you can start if you’re trying to start romance if you’re trying to get there on the Baldur’s Gate 3 release date. He’s located at the Roadside cliffs.

To get his approval and start chasing romance with Gale, you’ll need to show intelligence as well as kindness. It’s best to be non-violent, but Gale is particularly interested in magic and poetry.

Lae’zel

Lae’zel is one of the Baldur’s Gate 3 romance options that can get a bit weird since they have the ability to turn into a monster. She’s a fighter-class character. You’ll gain an advantage with her approval by taking some actions. To get further, you can attack Taman and Giumblelock outside the crypt, crush tadpoles, tell people you can’t help them, and generally being cruel. Being sympathetic or agreeing with Shadowheart all reduce your approval with Lae’zel too.

Wyll

The next of the Baldur’s Gate 3 Romance options is Wyll. He’s a human warlock and the Blade of the Frontiers. Although, beneath the surface, he has a pact with the devil.

To get a positive opinion and romance with Wyll, you’ll need to be generally helpful, agreeing to fight for others and help characters out. You’ll also need to turn down the devil’s offers and avoid cruel behaviours. He’ll leave all together if you side with goblins too so keep that in mind if he’s your pick out of the romanceable characters in Baldur’s Gate 3.
