“I See Myself on Characters Like KAY/O” – TenZ to Continue on Support Roles

Sentinels player Tyson “TenZ” Ngo is likely going to continue playing support roles for his team in the 2024 VCT Season

Tyson “TenZ” Ngo is one of the most well-known players in Valorant’s Esports scene, and while many fans loved seeing his flashy plays on Jett, the 22-year-old is likely going to take a different path in the upcoming VCT 2024 season. 

Sean Gares – former Counter-Strike pro, now a well-respected caster analyst and coach in Valorant – recently brought Sentinels player TenZ onto his broadcast. During this podcast, the Canadian star player talked about his team’s poor performance in 2023, recent changes, and his preferred roles, among other things. 

TenZ on His Preferred Roles

When asked about whether he will be sticking to playing flex roles or going back to Duelist Agents for the 2024 season, TenZ mentioned focusing more on support characters – “I’m probably sticking towards, like, flash Initiators. Maybe I might rock out, like, one dualist map if we're doing a double-Duelist. But, other than that, like, I think I kind of see myself on characters like KAY/O or Yoru.”

TenZ was primarily seen on Duelist Agents like Jett and Neon during this year’s VCT Americas. Later, at the Americas Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ), he switched to supportive roles with KAY/O while still opting for Jett on Split, where Sentinels employed the double-Duelist approach that’s been the meta on the particular map. 

While Sentinels still faced disappointing defeats in the LCQ, the Canadian star did well on Initiator, picking up huge numbers of assists through excellent flashes that were highlights of the team’s gameplay.

“I think I'm a lot better suited for that (playing KAY/O and Yoru), and actually just fits my play style a lot better. I won't lie, like, when I started playing the game and, like; obviously, you could just put like a really high fragging player on Jett, for example, but I think it kind of, like, put me on the wrong path for the game.” – the 22-year-old told Sean Gares.

If TenZ continues to play supportive Agents, we will likely see Zachary “zekken” Patrone as the primary Duelist for the North American roster. Moreover, with Mouhamed “johnqt” Ouarid as the new IGL, it will be interesting to see how the squad decides to distribute the roles.
