FaZe make history by winning IEM Sydney 2023 against North American Complexity

FaZe Clan have defeated Complexity in an exciting Best of 3 in the Grand Final of Counter-Strike 2’s first international event. The series went to distance, with Complexity taking Overpass and FaZe securing victory on Nuke. Ancient, the third map of the game, was the most nerve-wracking, as even with Complexity making a near-historical comeback, FaZe were able to close it out in double-overtime.

From the North American side, former Liquid member Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski had an incredible performance, scoring a 70-55 K-D and a 1.32 rating, the highest among all players of both teams. Helvijs “broky” Saukants secured the MVP title on the winning side with a 1.23 rating and a K-D of 65-57.

Complexity’s Flawless Defense on Overpass

Complexity’s map pick landed on Overpass, where they were able to secure a 5-7 half on the T side, which was great for such a CT-sided map. During the second half, the North American squad’s IGL Ioannis ‘Johnny' “JT” Theodosiou had control of the match, not allowing more than four rounds to go into FaZe’s favor.

Overpass ended with Complexity winning 13-11, but Nuke wasn’t going to be easy as it had recently been FaZe’s strongest map.

FaZe Fire Back on Nuke

The Europeans were looking comfortable on their map pick, securing a dominating 8-4 half in their favor on the T side. Complexity tried to make a comeback on their T side, but thanks to broky’s incredible hold with the AWP, FaZe were able to secure their first map with a 13-10 scoreline.

FaZe Crush the Hope Of Complexity on Ancient

With a strong CT side, FaZe secured a 9-3 lead on Ancient, and it was looking like an easy victory for Finn “karrigan” Andersen’s squad. However, Complexity fueled their comeback with a 9-3 half of their own, taking the match to overtime. This was possible thanks to EliGE’s aggressive pushes down mid alongside Håkon “hallzerk” Fjærli making round-winning plays with the AWP.

The North Americans survived the first overtime, but couldn’t secure more than one round in the second one, losing the chance to win their first IEM trophy. With this victory, FaZe have carried their dominance from Global Offensive to a new chapter of the game.
