The dream run of EDward Gaming in VCT 2023 Masters Tokyo has come to a heartbreaking end
In a highly anticipated lower bracket matchup, the Chinese sensation EDward Gaming went up against the Pacific Champions, Paper Rex. Keeping true to the pre-match predictions, it was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. EDG entered the match with a confidence-boosting victory over VCT 2022 Champions LOUD, while PRX had recently suffered a devastating defeat against FNATIC in the previous round. Given that and the fact that the Singaporeans are playing with a sub, Smoggy and Co were considered the favorite by the fans. Yet, it was the Pacific team who struck first, securing a nail-biting 14-12 victory on the map Fracture. While EDG swiftly responded with a dominant win on Split, their valiant efforts fell short on the final map, resulting in a 13-9 loss for the Chinese squad.

EDward Gaming's arrival in Tokyo was accompanied by minimal expectations, positioning them as one of the biggest underdogs of the Masters Tokyo event. From being one of the biggest underdogs of the Masters Tokyo to reaching the top 6 was a notable achievement for the Chinese side, to say the least. Especially their wins over two of the tournament favorites, NAVI and LOUD, were the highlight of the Tokyo Masters so far.
