Deep Rock Galactic Survivors has been modeled on the auto-shooter we know and love, Vampire Survivors. Hence, here are the similarities between them
Deep Rock Galactic Survivors is the newest game release of 2024 and it is a spin-off of the well known first-person shooter we know as Deep Rock Galactic. Developed by Funday Games, it is a third-person shoot 'em’ up game which is still in early access. In the game, you play as a Dwarf whose sole mission is to plow through swarms of alien monsters and collect resources to upgrade your weapons.
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Of course, it does because the game is modeled upon another beloved third-person roguelike shoot 'em’ up game called Vampire Survivors. Hence, here are all the similarities between the games.
Deep Rock Galactic Survivors vs Vampire Survivors
As we all know, Vampire Survivors is based in a rural city in Italy in 2021. The evil vampire, Bisconte Draculó sends hordes of his monsters to ravage the rural land. To stop this madness, the heroic family known as Belpase and the other survivors on the land take it upon themselves to destroy the monsters. This quest to take down Bisconte Draculó is what creates the main storyline of the game we love.
The main objective of the game is to navigate and plow through the swarms of monsters sent by Bisconte Draculó in different infested areas. These infested areas include a haunted library, an ominous tower crawling with creatures, an abandoned dairy plant, a cursed forest and an otherworldly chapel.
The player gets to choose between multiple characters with different stats alongside starting weapons and other bonuses. Of course, all these weapons are automatic and can be upgraded as you progress through the game. You also have to earn experience points or XP as you explore and finish each of the missions to level up “Floor Chicken” which restores the player’s health or HP. There are also other helpful items in the game that aid the player’s fight against the hordes of monsters as they progress through the different areas.
You also earn Gold Coins in the game during sessions and after a session is completed. These Gold Coins are used to unlock persistent or permanent power-ups of stats in the game. You can also unlock new characters for your gameplay using the Gold Coins. Completing the various stages also allows players to unlock new stages, game modes and game modifiers to enhance the gameplay.
On the other hand, Deep Rock Galactic Survivors is based on an alien planet known as Hoxxes IV. The planet has various biomes like a crystalline cavern, magma and lava-infested hot land and a lush green cave with not-so-friendly vegetation. In these specific biomes, the player has to embark on exploration journeys to mine and collect resources while fighting various hazards and swarms of alien monsters.
The player plays the role of a Dwarf Miner employed by Deep Rock Galactic, an intergalactic mining corporation that employs people to extract resources. The player gets to choose between four different classes of Dwarves including The Scout, The Engineer, The Driller and The Gunner. Each of these classes of Dwarves has its own unique stats and characters to choose from, uncanny to Vampire Survivors.
The main gameplay focuses on fighting the hordes of alien monsters with automatic weapons and extracting resources while completing objectives and finishing missions in the end. You also need to collect Red Sugar Cudes, a type of resource that is consumable to regain your health or HP in the missions, which is very reminiscent of Floor Chicken in Vampire Survivors. As the objectives are completed and hordes of monsters are slayed, you earn XP or experience points which then lets you upgrade your stats like weapon damage and HP alongside unlocking new weapons for the missions.
You also earn Gold Coins at the end of missions which lets you get new weapons and unlock new Characters for your gameplay alongside other helpful items, just like Vampire Survivors. Some of the helpful items or allies, we could say, like drones to shoot down the swarms of monsters and protect you from getting hit or throwable grenades.
Needless to say, the fact that Deep Rock Galactic Survivors is modeled from Vampire Survivors is very clearly evident in the gameplay features of each game. Everything from the progression system to the setting of the games is uncanny. The concept of completing objectives to progress the story or game is also there, along with the aspect of earning Gold Coins to get power-ups and new Characters.
As Deep Rock Galactic Survivors is still in early access, we might get to see a few unique features being added to the game but we aren’t counting on it. This is because how much more can Funday Games really add to an auto-shooter game that is straightforward and simple?
