Smokes are a crucial mechanic in CSGO. Knowing how to deal with enemy smokes could be the difference between winning and losing rounds.
One of the many things that make CSGO a fantastic game is the fact that you can use utilities. Learning how to make the most of our Flash, Grenades and Smokes can make a big difference while playing. In fact, it is safe to say that this is one of the significant differences between people who know what they’re doing and those who play for fun.
Most people know how to minimize the effectiveness of the Flash and how to avoid getting damaged by grenades. However, this is not the case when it comes down to Smokes. Since these utilities are different, most people don’t know what to do in order to minimize their effectiveness. That’s why we will show you some of the things you should be aware of.

Try to be aggressive
The first thing that you can do if you want to overcome the enemy’s smoke is to be as aggressive as possible. Before sharing more information about this tactic, it is essential to know that it may not always work. Some people throw excellent smokes that will completely block you, so you won’t be able to do anything.
For the purpose of this article, let’s just say that your opponents are not professional players. If you expect them to throw a smoke, you can position yourself in a way that will allow you to play aggressively. This means that you can try to peak and land at least a few sneaky kills as soon as the smoke arrives.
This tactic can work in many maps, such as Mirage, Dust 2, Inferno. It all depends on the situation, so you have to be ready to adapt.
Retreating when needed
One of the things that people do when they see a smoke is to position themselves in a way that will allow them to land kills if their enemies decide to push. Although this tactic could work, there are cases where it is better to position retreat and simply let them go through the given point.
This tactic might seem strange, and it is, but there are many situations where it works. The chances of killing multiple opponents after they throw a smoke are minimum. However, if you regroup and ask for assistance, you and your team might be able to score at least a few kills and even win the round.
Of course, retreating doesn’t mean you should leave the bombsite wide open. Preventing the Ts from planning the bomb is important, so keep that in mind.
Use Molotovs to counter the aggressive smokes
Although there are many exceptions, most Ts will try to rush as soon as they smoke a given location. The fact that CTs need to retreat gives them enough space to try and take over a given site.
One of the things that you can do to prevent them from achieving their goal is to use at least one or even two Molotovs (as long as you are not alone). Doing this will have one of two outcomes:
- The Ts will have to wait until it is over, which slows them down
- The Ts will just push through, allowing you to snatch at least a couple of kills
Of course, it all depends on the map and the specific situation, so this might not always be the case.
Final Thoughts
There are loads of CSGO guides that will help you learn more about the grenades and how to use them. Some of them might be long and tedious, but knowing how to use your Smokes properly is important. Once you know what to do, you can easily counter your enemies and progress through the ranks.
