How the Swiss Stage works
The Swiss Stage runs over two blocks: October 23 to 26, then October 28 to 31. Teams are paired against opponents with the same record each round. Three wins sends a team to the quarterfinals; three losses sends them home. Round 1 is played entirely as best-of-ones; as in recent years, the higher-stakes series later in the stage, where a win qualifies or a loss eliminates, move to best-of-three. Fearless Draft rules apply, so a champion picked in game one of a series is locked for the rest of that series.
The eight qualified teams play the quarterfinals and semifinals in Allen from November 3 to 8, and the final takes place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday, November 14. The prize pool is $5 million, with $1 million going to the champion.
Five matchups to watch on day one
Gen.G vs Invictus Gaming
The LCK champions open against China’s fourth seed. On paper that is a kind draw, but a Bo1 is the format where an upset is most plausible. Gen.G have more at stake: the top Korean seed losing on day one would reshuffle the entire bracket of pairings.
Anyone’s Legend vs Karmine Corp
Karmine Corp earned the last Swiss spot by beating Cloud9 3-2 and then sweeping MVK Esports 3-0 in the Play-In final, and their reward is the LPL’s first seed. The two sides met at the Esports World Cup over the summer, so this is a rematch with a scouting history on both benches.
G2 Esports vs Dplus KIA
Europe’s first seed opens against Korea’s fourth. G2 have beaten Korean teams at international events before, but Dplus KIA are the kind of disciplined, late-game team that punishes the loose early plays G2 tend to rely on in best-of-ones.
LOS vs T1
T1 are chasing a fourth consecutive Worlds title and start against the CBLOL champions, in the first year Brazil has had its own direct Swiss Stage slot. Anything other than a T1 win would be the shock of the round.
Team Liquid vs CTBC Flying Oyster
North America’s hopes rest on two matches against Asia-Pacific teams. Liquid, the LCS first seed, face Taiwan’s CFO, while LYON meet the LCP champions Team Secret Whales. On paper these are winnable openers for the LCS, and dropping either one would hurt their 3-0 hopes early.
