How Round 1 set this up
Friday was a bad day for China. All four LPL teams lost, while the LCK went 4-0 and the LEC’s two lowest seeds, Movistar KOI and Karmine Corp, beat Bilibili Gaming and Anyone’s Legend. G2 Esports were the only European side to lose, after leading Dplus KIA 7-0 in kills early in the game.
| 1-0 after Round 1 | 0-1 after Round 1 |
|---|---|
| Gen.G | Invictus Gaming |
| Hanwha Life Esports | Top Esports |
| Movistar KOI | Bilibili Gaming |
| Karmine Corp | Anyone’s Legend |
| Dplus KIA | G2 Esports |
| CTBC Flying Oyster | Team Liquid |
| T1 | LOS |
| LYON | Team Secret Whales |
The two LCK games to watch
T1 arrive as three-time defending world champions and opened with a routine win over LOS. Dplus KIA had a much messier start against G2 before turning it around in the mid game. A best-of-one between them is close to a coin flip, and whoever loses still has two more chances to reach three wins.
Hanwha Life against Gen.G is the other Korean meeting. Gen.G looked the sharpest team on Friday, with Chovy and Canyon controlling the late fights against Invictus Gaming, and Hanwha Life beat a Top Esports lineup that started without ZUIAN. The loser of this one becomes the first LCK team to carry a loss in the tournament.
The LPL needs a reset
Top Esports vs Anyone’s Legend opens the day, so one Chinese team is guaranteed to reach 1-1. The other three LPL sides face non-Chinese opponents: Invictus Gaming play Team Secret Whales, and Bilibili Gaming meet Team Liquid in the last game. A second loss would put any of them in the 0-2 pool, where every series from Round 3 onward is an elimination match.
The game we would watch is Karmine Corp vs LYON. Karmine Corp came through the Play-In and LYON were not among the favorites either. Both still won on Friday, and a 2-0 start for either would put a non-LCK, non-LPL team one series away from the quarterfinals.
What comes next
According to Sheep Esports, best-of-three series start in Round 3, which begins on October 25. Teams at 2-0 will play for a spot in the quarterfinals, and teams at 0-2 will play to stay alive.
