Worlds 2023 Swiss Stage Day 5 Recap – A Day of Intense Eliminations

Four Worlds 2023 teams at the bottom of the leaderboard viciously fought for their place in the Swiss stage

Day 5 focused on the bottom-placing teams, who fought tooth-and-nail to keep their spot at Worlds 2023. The first two saw the LCS #3 seed take on a minor region rep that showed up in style, while the second match-up pit an LEC team versus Deft's Dplus Kia. Two bo3 series pushed all of these teams to the limit, with players from last year's DRX playing their Worlds-winning pocket picks to establish dominance.

Worlds 2023 Day 5 Recap

TL vs GAM

Game 1

The first game had a slow start as both teams avoided overcommitting in the early game. But as soon as Kati found his groove, his Tristana started taking turret plates and stealing neutral objectives to find the gold lead. TL on the other hand couldn't play like a pro-team and got caught out of position numerous times, hindering their chances of winning despite having the better draft.

Quick Stats

  • Teams: TL 0 – 1 GAM
  • Time: 28:29
  • Kills: 8 – 15
  • Turrets: 2 – 8
  • Gold: 45.3k – 55.6k
  • Dragons: 2 – 1
  • Barons: 0 – 1

Game 2

With the bans heavily focused on big meta champs, GAM wasn't able to expect Pyosik's Kindred pocket pick. Needless to say, the mistake proved to be fatal. Still, GAM stood a chance with Slayder and Palette picking stronger 2v2 champs on bot side. That said, Kindred's roams and Worlds-level plays with Lamb's Respite ensured that his teammates got out of scraps alive.

APA and co. kept coming back stronger. As a result, Team Liquid completely controlled the map and got a strong victory to equalize the series.

Quick Stats

  • Teams: TL 1 – 1 GAM
  • Time: 25:09
  • Kills: 14 – 6
  • Turrets: 9 – 1
  • Gold: 49.2k – 42.6k
  • Dragons: 1 – 2
  • Barons: 0 – 1

Game 3

The game decided the team heading to the bracket stage, and came down to Kiaya's K'sante.

TL went for a risky Jax comp despite GAM's top-laner going with his pick. Moreover, the Vietnamese roster had great late-game picks with dependable scaling, which let them keep the lead throughout the match. So many good tools on the LCS side couldn't stop CAM's brawl comp from dominating the match, and winning the 0 – 2 bo3 series.

Quick Stats

  • Teams: GAM 2 – 1 TL
  • Time: 34:37
  • Kills: 19 – 4
  • Turrets: 11 – 4
  • Gold: 69.2k – 58.4k
  • Dragons: 4 – 1
  • Barons: 1 – 0

An explosive first match from both powerhouses ended in an LCK win as Deft's Caitlyn proved too much to handle. And despite Adam co. found picks where they could, DK's early leads eventually snowballed into a commanding win.

Quick Stats

  • Teams: DK 1 – 0 BDS
  • Time: 24:35
  • Kills: 18 – 6
  • Turrets: 10 – 2
  • Gold: 52.0k – 39.9k
  • Dragons: 1 – 2
  • Barons: 1 – 0

Game 2

BDS went all-out with Adam Olaf and a Rakan-Neeko engage comp for earlygame invades. With Sheo on Wukong, DK and Deft's Aphelios was seen as a big risk, but the World Champion ADC had a plan to win. After Canyon took first blood in a top lane skirmish, 2 more kills gave the South Korean team a big lead that forced BDS to play a slow, defensive game that still went Deft's way.

The EU 4th seed couldn't stop DK's relentless push towards their blue nexus, and a flawless series win. Dplus KIA eliminates Team BDS from the 2023 World Championship.

Quick Stats

  • Teams: BDS 0 – 2 DK
  • Time: 24:25
  • Kills: 4 – 8
  • Turrets: 2 – 9
  • Gold: 40.1k – 47.7k
  • Dragons: 0 – 3
  • Barons: 0 – 1
