If you've been feeling overwhelmed by all the Battle Royale games out right now, it looks like Ubisoft won't be adding to the pile with Ghost Recon Frontline canceled.
Ubisoft has a lot on its plate at the moment. Perhaps too much, as Ubisoft is canning four video games, one of them being Ghost Recon Frontline. Slated to have been a Battle Royale with a Ghost Recon paint job, Ghost Recon Frontline's reveal last year was not well-received. Many fans of the military tactical shooter franchise feel it has lost its way. Ghost Recon celebrated its twentieth birthday last year. Ubisoft's reveal of a Battle Royale with the Ghost Recon name came off as tone-deaf and further straying from classic Ghost Recon.
Ubisoft launched a closed beta in late January this year, and reception didn't get any better. Along with criticism of this not being a Ghost Recon experience, gamers panned Frontline for being too similar to other military Battle Royale games like Call of Duty: Warzone.
Fast-forward to Summer 2022, and Ghost Recon Frontline is officially a dead game. With the writing on the wall clearer than ever, it looks like Ubisoft made the right call with this one.
Ghost Recon Frontline isn't the only Ubisoft Battle Royale to bite the dust this year. Ubisoft announced in January that it was canceling Hyper Scape, after which the game shut down in late April.
Maybe Ubisoft should give Battle Royales a break. We at least have The Division Resurgence to look forward to soon.
