Baldur’s Gate 3 has tons of content to explore now it has launched in full. There are all the different Baldur’s Gate weapons, classes, and stories to unfold. There’s one aspect which is basically a must-do for a lot of players though. Figuring how to get Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has quite a few companions. However, a cute animal is definitely the biggest attraction to a lot of players. Compared to some others though it can be tricky to befriend Owlbear in Baldur’s Gate 3. Owlbear in BG3 is a completely unique companion, and fittingly it takes a bit of work to get him to move in with you. You’ll need to track animals in caves, deal with goblins, and maybe even engage in a strange and kind of cruel game.

Owlbear Cub is a half-bear and half-owl creature! They actually hail from the very first supplementary rulebook for Dungeons and Dragons. One of these critters has taken on a major role in Baldur’s Gate 3 though as the Owlbear Cub companion.

To get to know the cub, you’ll need to befriend them and add them into your camp to come along as a companion. This is how to get Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Find the Owlbear Nest

The first step to getting this companion is to locate the nest of these creatures as a whole. This all starts when you find an Owlbear and its little cub. These are located in a cave which you can find between the Druid Grove and the Blighted Village. Head upwards from a bridge and you’ll find a cave with some tracks leading into it. These tracks aren’t locked to the Ranger class or anything, it’s simple to track down Owlbear in BG3.

Follow these tracks into the cave and you’re going to find the Owlbear and its cub. Then a cutscene starts. There are two ways to get through the next stage. Animal Handling will allow you to study the Owlbear’s behaviour. Or you can puff out your chest and roar to pass a survival check, or back away with a performance check, or attack. There are often loads of ways to solve problems, one of the main things that have won Baldur’s Gate 3 such great reviews.

Once you’re past this stage, there are a few things you can do next. The Owlbear Cub should be exposed. Here, you can hold a hand out to prove you don’t mean any harm. Or you can move toward, back away slowly, or attack. If you fail any of these checks or have hostile behaviour, then you will end up with the Owlbear attacking you.

If you walk towards the Owlbear and leave it alive, you’ll be able to encounter the Owlbear again for a second time. Then, you can take it to your camp and progress in getting the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3.

You can also take out the elder Owlbear here. However, if you do this and you still want to be able to adopt the Owlbear as your own, you can do so but you need to do some extra steps. Obviously, if you’ve just attacked then to befriend the Owlbear in Baldur’s Gate 3 you’ll have to prove you’re not a threat. You just need to make sure that you interact with the cub afterwards. Don’t harm the cub, but interact with it to build a relationship.

Tracking Down the Owlbear in BG3 the Second Time

Once you’ve finished the cave encounter, you’ll need to find the animal a second time to successfully befriend the Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3. To do this, you’ll need to head to a Goblin Camp. This is found just outside of the Druid Grove and blighted Village. On one side of the camp you’ll see the cub. However, it is surrounded by Goblins.

Find the Owlbear Cub this second time and go to interact with it. This leads you into a conversation with Krolla, a Goblin. She explained the rules of a game called Chicken Chasing to you. This game becomes key to how to get Owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3.

She eventually tells you to come back when “that halfwit’s done wailin’.”. She’s talking about Vol the Bard, who has been captured by the goblins. Talk to him in the middle of the camp then go back to Krolla.

At this point, you can talk to the Owlbear Cub again. To convince it to trust you, you’ll need to pass two separate Animal Handling checks though. Then, it’ll tell you to sort out the Goblins. Once that is done, you can finally follow your scent to find the camp.

The next stage of this whole ordeal is to deal with the Goblins in the camp. There’s more than one way to do this. They both have the same effect if you only care about how to get Owlbear Cub in Baldur’s Gate 3. However, one method will let you get a bit of extra gold.

When it comes to Chicken Chasing and Krolle you have only two options. You can denounce Chicken Chasing as cruel, or you can take part and get some gold. There’s also the brutal option of just taking out every single goblin instead. How you’re choosing to play your character in Baldur’s Gate 3 is really up to you. Just like your choice of race in BG 3 or class, you can choose to go the violent option. However, denouncing chicken-chasing is the easiest route to get the Owlbear in BG3.

To do this, go to Krolla and tell her you don’t want to play because it’s cruel. Then talk to her again and let her know you’re taking the owlbear cub. There are a few options here. You can try to intimidate, persuade, or buy the cub. One of these will likely be easier than others depending on what of the Baldur’s Gate 3 builds you’re playing. Once you’re through that you can take the animal and finish your quest to get the Owlbear cub in Baldur’s Gate 3.

That’s the easiest way. For the sake of competition though, we’ll still cover another method too.  That’s actually engaging with the game.

You can also play Chicken-Chasing. You wager 30 or 75 gold then go through the entire game. To even your odds, interact with the Owlbear Cub to do some checks and get it to either run through the posts or attack the goblins. Once you win, you’ll have to do another check to get your winnings Then you can once again talk to her to try and take the cub home with you.

The other option for how to befriend Owlbear in Baldur's Gate 3 is to take out the goblins, which is pretty self-explanatory!

That’s all you need to do to befriend the Owlbear Cub in BG3. You won’t see it in the camp immediately though. You’ll have to wait a little while and wait for them to appear though. Once they do, you’ll have yourself one of the coolest animals available in Baldur’s Gate 3 as a pet!
