G2 Esports Puts an End to the Excel Miracle Run With a 3-0 Sweep and Wins the 2023 Summer Split

The last split LEC Split before the first-ever Season Finals concluded with another victory for G2 Esports.

After back-to-back 10th place finishes in both Winter and Spring, not many fans expected Excel to be challenging for a LEC trophy and a Worlds spot in the Summer Split. But despite all expectations, Excel was the biggest surprise of the split as they clawed their way all the way up to the Summer Finals for a Bo5 rematch against G2 Esports, who they lost 3-2 during the Round 1 of the Playoffs.

With the previous game going to full five games, and with Excel’s massive performance against Fnatic in the Lower Bracket Finals, some heads started to turn toward Excel and a possibility of an upset. But G2 Esports came into the second series between these two teams seemingly shaken off the rust from last week and they did not give Excel a chance to fight back before they closed out the series in a clean 3-0—lifting 11th LEC trophy in the organization’s history.

The name of the game for this series has been the early games as G2 Esports managed to find the skirmishes they were looking for in each of the games. And with the exception of Game 2, they gave no breathing room for Excel to even attempt a comeback. The first and third games were over before 25 minutes and G2 really showed the dominant playstyle that EU fans come to expect from them in domestic competition.

Unlike the previous LEC seasons, the 2023 LEC Summer Finals isn’t the last game of the year since there are still the Season Finals to be played with the new format. The Summer Finals result didn’t impact the qualification or seeding for the Season Finals since both teams were already qualified and Excel winning today would not give them enough championship points for a better seeding.

The inaugural LEC Season Finals will start on August 19 and conclude with a Finals Weekend held at Sud de France Arena in Montpellier, France, on September 9-10. Six LEC teams with the most championship points earned throughout the 2023 Season—G2, MAD, BDS, Excel, Fnatic and SK—will compete for the chance to represent EU at Worlds 2023.
