FFXIV Glamour System Explained
If you're coming from World of Warcraft, the best way to explain the Glamour System is in FFXIV. It is a way to dress up the way you like as long as meet certain requirements and can wear that gear. It is one of the best versions of that system once you work you wrap your head around it. But don't worry, we got you covered.
How to Unlock Glamour's in FFXIV
To unlock the Glamour system, you'll need to visit Swyrgeim in Western Thanalan at Vesper Bay (X:12.6 Y:14.3) and accept the quest “If I Had a Glamour” which asks you to obtain Bloody Orange Juice from the nearby tavern for her. If you have any crafters leveled, you can also accept “Absolutely Glamourous” here to unlock the crafting recipe for Glamour Prisms and Glamour Dispellers.
Both these quests are available at level 15 and unlocked after you complete her quest “Color Your World”. Once you've done that, you should be able to access the glamour system via the equipment menu and in any Inn's Glamour Dresser.
Glamour Prism and Glamour Dispellers
A quick rundown on these, a Glamour Prism is a kind of currency you need to apply glamour, overlaying one piece of equipment with another. You can craft them, buy them on the market board, or purchase them for Grand Company Seals at your Grand Company. It's worth keeping a few of these in your inventory at all times.
The Glamour Dispellers do the opposite. They are used to remove glamour from a piece of equipment. Just like Glamour Prisms, they can be crafted, and obtained via the market board or bought off your Grand Company via Seals.
The Glamour Dresser and You
Let's not kid ourselves, once you fall down the FFXIV rabbit hole, you'll spend most of your time in front of this cursed thing trying out new outfits. You'll find a Glamour Dresser in every Inn of every major city. Limsa Lominsa, Ul'dah, Gridania, Ishgard, Kugane, The Crystarium, and Old Sharlayan.
Approach the Glamour Dresser and you'll be prompted to either add new items to it or move on to the glamour plates. You can add any piece of equipment to the glamour dresser as long they are fully repaired and don't have any Materia slots filled up. Adding a piece of equipment to the glamour dresser will set you back a Glamour Prism.
Keep in mind that once you've added a piece of equipment to the glamour dresser it will become soulbound and you won't be able to resell it.
Now we can move on to Glamour Plates. Here you get to fill out out templates which you can apply in any town/safe zone as long as you meet the given requirements. You can also dye pieces of equipment here. To apply the glamour plate, you'll need to be able to wear the item you want to glamour on your current job and its item level needs to be below the gear you're currently wearing.
Did you know that if you take a piece of equipment out of your glamour dresser, it'll still be on your Glamour Plate as long as you don't overwrite it? Now you do.
A little something about Glamour Plates
Glamour Plates are fairly straightforward, you can either apply them in the equipment menu directly or via the Glamour Dresser. You can also assign a Glamour Plate to individual gear sets so you'll equip and refresh them automatically whenever you switch between jobs.
Also, keep in mind that Glamour Plates will break your adventurer portrait. To fix it, you'll simply need to hit “Update Gear Set”. Sometimes that won't be enough though and you'll need to reapply the portrait completely by going into its options.
