Today, publisher Paradox Interactive and studio Colossal Order revealed that Cities: Skylines II would be released later this year on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

Here is the official press release:

Paradox Interactive and Colossal Order today announced Cities: Skylines II, a revolutionary sequel to their hit city-simulation game.

Cities: Skylines II offers the most realistic city simulation ever created, in which players can build any kind of city they can imagine and follow its growth from a humble village to a bustling metropolis.

From individual households to the city’s economy and transportation system, Cities: Skylines II offers a deep and immersive simulation that welcomes both new and veteran players. Cities: Skylines II launches on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5 later this year.

A modern take on the city-building genre, Cities: Skylines II lets players create and maintain cities that come to life like never before, complete with fully-realized transport and economy systems, a wealth of construction and customization options, and advanced modding capabilities.

Revealed during the Paradox Announcement Show 2023, Cities: Skylines II evolves the city-building genre further, letting players build the cities of their dreams with the most open-ended city-building sandbox on the planet.

Spiritual Successor

Even with a zillion DLCs and most of its content being funny meme videos, Cities: Skylines filled a very important niche that Sim City left behind. While the city-builder genre popped up in various forms since the demise of Sim City, none of them have come even close to challenging Cities: Skylines crown.

From somewhat accurate traffic simulation on a massive scale, simulated floods that rip an entire coastline apart, or something as simple yet annoying as sewage management.

If you haven't checked out Cities: Skylines yet, it's worth taking a look at even with a sequel on the horizon. Especially with its endless catalog of mods and costume maps that can make any dream city a reality.

You'll not find a more in-depth city-building sim than Cities: Skyline. That also means that expectations for the sequel will be sky-high. And compared to Cities: Skyline's current lineup of DLC it'll probably take years until Cities: Skylines II will reach the same wealth of content.

But it could also mean that mods might find their way to console with this new installment.

And if Paradox Interactive and Colossal Order keep going as they had with Cities: Skylines, the second installment of the franchise will receive generous support, updates, and DLC for a long time.

The first game has received a total of 14 mainline DLCs and regular updates since its release in 2015. As well as ports to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and next-gen consoles. And even an augmented reality version for the Meta Quest 2 and for PlayStation VR2 coming later this year.
