Overwatch 2: Potential Problems in 2023

Overwatch 2 is in its second season, and it seems like the game has a promising future ahead of it. Despite the fact that OW 2 lost most of the players that were active during the launch, it continues to have hundreds of thousands of fans. Season 2 definitely helped because the game introduced new skins, a hero, a map, and more.

We are yet to see some of the new things from Season 2 this January, which means that the first couple of months will be interesting. However, the game has a lot of challenges ahead of it, some of which could have a negative impact on it and the players.

What you’re about to see is a list of the potential problems you should be aware of regarding Overwatch 2 in 2023. Hopefully, we will be able to avoid most things, but we’re yet to see if this will be the case.

Blizzard and China

As the world’s largest country in terms of population, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that China is one of the biggest markets for everything, including gaming. Even though Blizzard hasn't had that many problems over the years, the country's latest regulations may affect the game and its players.

Due to laws, as well as several other things, Blizzard released an announcement in November where it said that it would restrict some of its game services within mainland China. This may not seem like a big deal unless you reside there, but the fact that Chinese players won’t have access to Overwatch 2 will undoubtedly affect our beloved game.

The absence of Chinese players in OW 2 will affect the company because it won’t be able to make as much money as before. We hope that this won’t have that much of an effect on future updates, but only time will tell.

Of course, Blizzard can always find new partnerships in the country and work its way through the regulations. It will be interesting to see what will happen.

Lack of unique options

Some Overwatch 2 players are more than happy with things like new skins, but most users are interested in other things. For example, Blizzard said they would create a PvE mode, something that many people look forward to. However, we are yet to see.

It’s been around 2 and a half months since Overwatch 2 first became available, and we’ve already seen 4 new heroes and new maps. Most players will be happy if this trend continues, but some will want even more options. This is where Overwatch 2’s devs have to come up with something new to keep players occupied.

Not paying enough attention to the community

Despite the fact that Blizzard improved a lot in terms of implementing things suggested by the community, there is room for improvement. That said, since Activision became a part of Microsoft in early 2022, some fans are concerned that this may change.

Even though some of the community’s suggestions are not always practical and can’t be implemented, there are many cases where they might work. This is especially true if they come from someone who has a lot of experience in the game. That’s why it will be a good idea if the company decides to talk to the Overwatch 2 professionals, as well as those who’ve reached the highest rating.

The fact that these players are so good at the game means that they know everything about the game and know how to help the devs improve it. Of course, it is up to Blizzard to decide whether to listen to them.

A rapid decline in the number of active players

Although this is more or less related to Blizzard’s potential problems in China, we have to point out that there is a risk of a rapid decline in the number of active players. Speaking of the devil, the queues that were present during the first couple of days after OW 2’s release were nowhere to be found. In fact, the overall player base of Overwatch dropped significantly in the last few years.

Even though we don’t believe that OW 2 will run out of active players, the fact that there are so many new games people can choose from has to be taken into account. In case you don’t remember, titles like PUBG, Fortnite, and Apex Legends took over the world several years ago. Unsurprisingly, they’ve “stolen” a lot of players from many other titles, including the likes of Overwatch 2.

Who knows, there might be a lot of new games that we are yet to see. There were rumors that Valve might update its CSGO, which will undoubtedly impact Overwatch 2. Even though these two games are not exactly the same, they have a similar fan base.
