Square Enix’s mobile game set in the NieR universe announces a collaboration event with Final Fantasy XIV for early summer 2022.
In celebration of its one year anniversary, mobile game NieR Re[in]carnation held a special live show today, the mobile title had recently announced that it surpassed 15M downloads.
One Year of Re[in]arnation
Celebrating the games success with director/writer Yoko Taro, producer Yosuke Saito and composer Keiichi Okabe. But what caught a lot of attention outside the NieR fandom, was the announcement for a collaboration with MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. Set to start sometime in may this year, according to the roadmap presented.
While NieR Re[in]carnation fell somewhat under the radar here in the west, the game managed to attract a passionate audience already. This lead the game to cycle through collaborations with previous games directed by Yoko Taro. Namely NieR Replicant, NieR Automata and Drakengard. With several of their characters appearing in the mobile entry with their own unique stories.
NieR Re[in]carnation
The mobile title is set in the same universe as Yoko Taro’s NieR, NieR itself started out as a spin-off of one of Drakengards many endings. It’s an ongoing story, currently in its second act. The first one being ‘The Girl and the Monster’, the current one ‘The Sun and the Moon’. The story is set in ‘The Cage’ , a series of dungeons and towers that harbour forgotten memories. It features Yoko Taro’s signature touches. A story full with melancholy, characters reflecting on their actions and a general sense of dread.
Gameplay itself consists of exploring dungeons, fighting in turn based combat with up to three characters. And the usual array of madness people have come to expect from Yoko Taro’s game. Including a minigame with strange resemblance to the now defunct mobile game Flappy Bird.
Acts of Virtue, Deeds of Cruelty
Final Fantasy XIV had previously collaborated with Yoko Taro and 2017’s NieR Automata with The Dark Apocalypse Alliance Raid series. Which Yoko Taro designed and wrote the story for, while composer Keiichi Okabe created a few unique musical compositions. Now fans will wonder now if this collaboration will continue the story of the Final Fantasy XIV collaboration or if we are off to a new adventure.
