Is Granblue Fantasy Relink a sequel or not? We try and answer your questions and give you an idea of where to start.
Granblue Fantasy Relink is right around the corner and we've spent some time in the Early Access of the new Action Adventure RPG. After Granblue Fantasy Versus made a glorious comeback, it's time for Cygame's mobile hit to make a splash in the big RPG scene.
And ReLink is everything and then some. In a year that is stacked with RPG heavy hitters such as Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Relink is fighting an uphill battle. While the franchise is very popular in the East, it's virtually unknown in the West. So many have been asking if Granblue Fantasy Relink is a sequel or not. And the answer is a little more complicated.
Is Granblue Fantasy Relink a Sequel?
Granblue Fantasy is a Mobile Game by Cygame that has been going for almost 10 years at this point. Throughout its lifecycle, it received a myriad of updates that continued to tell an ongoing story while also expanding on the world with smaller episodes honing on other characters or aspects of its lore.
It's a Gacha Game through and through which means that the main appeal is its characters and how they interact with each other. Granblue's Cast is enormous and the titular Character Gran or the Female version, Djeeta serves as the player's point of view.
This brings us to Relink, Relink is best thought of as an in-between episode of the major story going on in Granblue Fantasy which is currently in its 3rd major arc “Wayfaring Astral”. While Relink does a great job of introducing you to its world and characters, there is a lot more for you to find out.
The Gist of the story of Granblue Fantasy goes as follows: The Protagonist Gran/Djeeta comes in contact with a mysterious girl called Lyria who after a series of unfortunate events merges her soul with the protagonist. They set out to discover the origin of Lyria's power while escaping the all-powerful empire.
Gran/Djeeta and their growing band of friends travel around on an Airship between the floating islands that make up the world of Granblue Fantasy. The rest of the story is mostly told throughout smaller episodes composing larger arcs that see regular updates throughout a few years.
Relink is a bottle episode of sorts and a mostly self-contained adventure taking place in the same universe as the main game and the Fighting Game. It's like the Once Piece movies an excuse to have all the characters just hang out and have fun while the player gets to experience what makes the series special in the first place.
While playing Relink, you'll be introduced to some of Granblue Fantasy's cast and learn more about its world. The main attraction of the game has always been its cast of characters. The lore and history of this world are not as important as it initially seems.
You get a lot of insights into the characters just by the way they interact with each other rather than getting a full introduction from the beginning or end. That doesn't mean Granblue Fantasy Relink doesn't know how to tell a compelling story but it's both a little celebration of the larger series and the lasting success of the franchise rather than an attempt to give you the full experience in one package.
If you want to learn more or experience the story of Granblue Fantasy. The mobile game can be played in English on your phone and in your browser even without an official English release. Parts of the story are also told via the Anime Adaptation by A-1 Pictures and Mappa which aired in 2017 and 2019 respectively, there's also a Manga adaptation which was serialized between 2016 and 2019, and the self-contained story of Granblue Fantasy Versus Rising.
If you want to take the plunge, don't be overwhelmed by feelings of having to catch up. Granblue is more of an assembled cast adventure than a grand epic fantasy tale and we hope we could give you some insight before plunging into this world with Granblue Fantasy Relink.
