Final Fantasy 16: How to Defeat Coeurl

Coeurl is a boss that players will encounter during the course of the Final Fantasy 16 “Capital Punishment” main mission, right after beating Liquid Flame. He is the first of two bosses you will encounter in this mission. As usual, we advise you to follow an excellent strategy to complete this battle and continue with the story of the game. In this article, we will give you some useful tips and strategies to follow if you want to defeat Coeurl.

Location, rewards, and abilities

As we have already mentioned, players will have to face Coeurl during the main quest “Capital Punishment” which takes place in the Rosalith area in the Grand Duchy of Rosalia region. Players who are able to defeat this boss will receive rewards, including 300 XP, 60 AP, and 2000 Gil, as well as items that will be revealed in the continuation of the story such as Magicked Ash, Sharp Fang, and Coeurl Whisker.

However, we urge you to keep your eyes peeled and don't underestimate this boss. To be able to defeat Coeurl you will need to adopt the right strategy and be able to think and act very quickly. Furthermore, we remind you that Coeurl, like most of the other bosses in the game, has special skills at his disposal that he can use in combat and which have the task of making the fight more difficult. These abilities are Whipcrack, Electrocharge, and Wild Charge.

How to defeat Coeurl

Coeurl's attack strategy is very simple: he will pounce you constantly and then use a combination of different attacks including 360 spins, electrocuted paw attacks, and whiplashes. Predicting his movements is very simple since, before launching an attack, he will emit electricity from his body, giving you very useful advice on him when to dodge his blows or when to parry.

One very important thing to keep in mind while fighting Coeurl is that once he will be staggered for the first time, he will go into an enraged mode for the second half of the fight. This means that his attacks will become stronger and faster and it will take less time to switch from one attack to another. We advise you to pay more attention to this second stage as he will be more difficult to fight than the first stage and he will be able to deal a higher amount of damage. To overcome this problem, you can make use of a combination of skills by switching between the different Eikons at your disposal, in order to maximize the damage dealt.

Coeurl's abilities

Coeurl has several skills available that he will use during the fight, especially once he enters enraged mode. One skill to look out for is Whipcrack which will allow the boss to bring his long tendrils towards you and whip them at you. To dodge this attack, a normal dodge won't help, but you need to use the Phoenix Shift skill as trendils have a fairly high range.

Another thing to keep in mind is its electricity usage. When he makes use of the Wild Charge ability, Coeurl will create areas of electricity on the ground that will inflict a lot of damage, also because they will call lightning from the sky that will strike precisely in these points. This ability is perhaps the most dangerous for it hits both from below and from above, in addition to the fact that Coeurl will still be able to move and hit you with his basic attacks.

Finally, when he uses his Electrocharge skill, we advise you to use all your skills until you completely empty the bar in the upper right corner of your screen. During this ability, Coeurl will be able to drop lightning bolts from the sky which, if they hit you, will do a lot of damage, so always pay attention when you are in the middle of your attack and always wait for the right moment.
