FFXIV Mounts Explained

Learn everything there is to know about FFXIV Mounts. How to unlock them, how to get them to fly, and how to fill out your stable.

The mount is a staple of the MMORPG. A status symbol, a means of transportation, or just an expression of your personality. Your mount is often an extension of you, the player who worked so hard to get it.

And the critically acclaimed MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV is no different. You unlock mounts relatively early and they are the main way of transportation once you leave the protection of one of the city-states.

So if you have just started, there is a quick guide on mounts.

How to unlock FFXIV Mounts

Once you have completed the level 20 Main Scenario Quest “A Hero in the Making”, you'll be asked to join one of the three Grand Companies. Once you've joined up, you'll be able to take on the quest “My Little Chocobo”.

This quest requires you to collect 200 Company Seals (via FATEs or Hunting Lock) and purchase a Chocobo Issuance from your Grand Companies Quartermaster. Once you've done that and handed in the Issuance to the Chocobo Porter, you'll be able to name your Chocobo and unlock mounts and riding.

Now you can unlock new mounts that can be found or purchased at various locations. At level 30 you'll also be able to do the follow-up quest My Feisty Little Chocobo which allows you to employ your Chocobo in battle.

Fighting Mounts in FFXIV

While you can't fight your mounts in FFXIV, you can have a fighting mount. Your Chocobo! You'll unlock the ability to have your Chocobo fight at your side by completing the quest My Feisty Little Chocobo which is available at level 30.

Your Chocobo will gain EXP and level up alongside you. Just do keep in mind that your Chocobo can only be summoned in open content. You can't take them into instanced zones. To summon your Chocobo, you only need to use a Gysahl Green.

How to unlock flying in FFXIV

Flying is unlocked once players complete the base Main Scenario Quest of A Realm Reborn which ends with the quest “The Ultimate Weapon”. You'll be able to fly on any non-city map in A Realm Reborn.

From Heavensward onwards, players need to find Aether Currents scattered all across a zone. Some of these are rewarded by completing optional side quests and one is always rewarded at the end of a zones storyline.

How to Increase Mount Speed in FFXIV

You can also increase your mount speed in Final Fantasy XIV. Following the Main Scenario Quests will unlock speed-ups little by little until the end of Stormblood.

You can also purchase Riding Maps for Allied Seals, Centurio Seals, and Bicolor Gemstones from various vendors in the overworld. Just be aware that this mount speed only increases your speed on the ground, not your flying speed.

Unlocking New Mounts

There are a lot of mounts in Final Fantasy XIV. They are rewards for pretty much any kind of content you can engage in. They are most prominently dropped from the final fight of a Savage Raid Tier and the Extreme Trials. Those are the most common ones people will grind out.

You can also obtain mounts via purchase in the Gold Saucer, some are rewards for Achievements and others are random drops from Deep Dungeons and exploratory content. If you start collecting now, you'll never be done but it is a nice thing to do while waiting for new content to drop.

And that sums up everything you need to know about mounts in Final Fantasy XIV. For more guides and the latest around the critically acclaimed MMORPG, check out our other content here.
