Fallout is one of the most popular game franchises, offering deep RPGs set in a retro-futurist post-apocalyptic world. An adaptation for the game and Fallout TV show has been talked about for ages, who doesn’t want to see the horrors of the vaults or super mutants in live-action? Plans for a Fallout TV show have really progressed lately. We’ve already gotten our first look at what the Amazon Fallout TV series is going to look like.

Video game adaptations have a bit of a bad hit rate. For every popular adaptation like Cyberpunk Edgerunners, there’s something like World of Warcraft or Assassin’s Creed. Despite the odds, there’s a lot of excitement around the Fallout TV shown. The casting and behind-the-scenes talent on board seems positive, and from what we’ve seen so far it’s staying fairly close to the source material!

A recent glimpse at the new show reveals a decent amount about the setting of the show, and what fans can expect from it. On the surface, this looks like a fairly accurate adaptation. We’ve seen characters spotted sporting the trademark vault dweller outfits, power armor, and more. From this short trailer, there’s already quite a bit we can glean on what to expect from the show. What’s the Fallout TV Show About?

We don’t have a specific plot for the Fallout TV show. Although, this teaser and the games themselves can tell us quite a bit about what we’re in for.

The basic premise is pretty well-known. Fallout takes place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, set after a nuclear war has avenged the earth. Although, it’s more of a pop-culture nuclear apocalypse than a grim reality. The Fallout TV show isn’t going to be Threads or When the Wind Blows. The world of Fallout features mutated creates, evil social experiments, starvation, cannibalism, and more horrific things but it also manages to balance that with a world that’s just weird enough to not be overwhelmingly grim.

Outside of the nuclear holocaust though, the setting before the bombs drop is a little different too. Fallout is set in an alternative universe where things developed differently following the end of the Second World War. While some technology is more advanced than our own, the fashions, culture, and other elements seem stripped right out of the 50s!

The look of some leaked sets seems to suggest their keeping to this aesthetic. Pictures of Vault sets have shown some distinctly retro-looking technology designs. Controls full of dials, bulky, with analogue meters rather than modern displays. Kind of like the stuff you see in old sci-fi serials instead of modern sleek tech. This mismatch of future and past is a big part of what makes Fallout unique, it’s great that it’s being kept intact here. As is one of the most important parts of the world of Fallout.

Vault 33 in the Fallout TV Show

In Fallout, many people survived the nuclear holocaust by taking shelter in the Vaults. These weren’t made to save anyone but were instead elaborate experiments each with a different concept. The Fallout TV Show teaser pointed towards one specific vault playing a role in the TV show, Vault 33.

Vault 33 hasn’t made an appearance in the games so far. So we don’t know the story of this particular vault. Often, the vaults were intended to study the effects of one cruel experiment or another. Such as populating the vault and then leaving it with a broken door, or releasing psychoactive drugs every 10 days just to see what happens.

While we don’t know exactly what the vault in the Fallout TV show will be, it’s the same set-up as in games. Typically, each game sees a player character in the future leaving their home vault. As a relative outsider to the world that’s developed since the vault was sealed, they have a perspective that helps ease the player in. Presumably, something similar will take place here, with the viewer being eased into Fallout’s unique world with the protagonist leaving the vault.

In the series so far, vaults under 50 usually mean the west coast. However, we can’t be sure if this is a rule the producers are following. Filming has been happening in Utah.

Most Fallout games see the player leave the vaults and move into the world beyond. The teaser for the Fallout TV Show does show an open door. We’re definitely going to see more than just Vault 33.

Is the Fallout TV Show Accurate to the Games?

We don’t for certain how close the Fallout TV Show will stick to the games, but there’s a decent idea so far. The teaser shows off seems to show that there’s a good level of accuracy going on here, with everything looking intact. Supermarkets from the game have even been seen in filming for the show.

The Fallout games got particularly popular after Bethesda took over with Fallout 3. These more modern styles of games are largely what the public thinks of Fallout. For better or worse! It’s likely the show will take some inspiration from this version of the game. However, there are sure to be some closer easter eggs and references to the original two versions of the game soon. That’s where a lot of the world-building originates.

Where to Watch the Fallout TV Series?

The Fallout TV show is being made by Amazon Studios. This definitely means there’s a clear place to find the show. It’ll be on Amazon Prime. The subscription service is available to everyone with a Prime subscription. It’s unlikely to be available legally anywhere else. 

Who is Cast from the Fallout TV Series?

There isn’t a full cast list for the Fallout TV Series right now, but we have some idea of who will be appearing. Quite a few cast members have already been announced for the show. This is what we know about so far:

• Walton Goggins – Known for Hateful Eight, Django Unchained, Sons of Anarchy
• Ella Purnell – Known for Arcane, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, Kick-Ass 2
• Kyle MacLachlan – Known for Twin Peaks, and David Lynch’s Dune, Blue Velvet
• Xelia Mendes-Jones
• Aaron Moten – known for Mozart in the Jungle, Next

Amazon has announced some of the bigger names already, like Kyle MacLachlan. However, the full cast is sure to feature a much bigger roster of talent taking part. Goggins specifically has been rumoured to be playing a Ghoul, a type of radiated mutant that survived the war outside of the vaults. 

Who is Working on the Fallout TV Series?

The Fallout TV Series has a big task of adapting such a well-liked property. However, there are some staff on board who inspire confidence in the project. Tom Howard and James Altman from Bethesda are serving as executive producers. Although, how much this is a hands-on role or just an acknowledgement of the rights holders is unknown. It isn’t clear if Tim Cain or anyone involved in creating Fallout are involved either.

In terms of writers, Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner have both joined the show as showrunners. These have been involved with Marvel films, a recent Tomb Raider movie, and Silicon Valley.

Anthena Wickman, Jonathon Nolan, and Lisa Joy will also be credited as executive producers. Along with Nolan directing the first episode. This will likely be important as the first episodes typically set the visual tone and language of a show. Directing a pilot is often reserved for a showrunner.

Release Date for Fallout TV Series

The Fallout TV Show has been in the works for a little while now, but we still don’t have a full release date for the show. It might be a little while longer before much more than this teaser is shown off.

After rumours flying around for quite a while, an official adaptation was officially announced in July 2021. Since then, it filmed later in 2022 at least according to a job posting.

It’s possible that Fallout TV show could come to our screens as soon as 2023! Although, there are loads of factors that could mean it’s a while longer. This is likely to be an effects-intensive show which could mean more time is needed before release. We’ll have to keep an eye out for future developments on the Fallout TV show, but 2023 seems the safest bet right now.

Images of Fallout TV Show

A number of leaked images have found their way online for the Fallout TV Show! Most of these have been quickly taken down by Amazon Studios, but some have survived on reddit. Assumedly Amazon is keen to avoid huge spoilers this far away from the show’s release. However, we do have some idea of how the show is going to look.

Shown off so far in the Fallout TV Show are corridors and sets of one of the Vault’s in-game, or potentially a vault-city. These look pretty accurate to what we’ve seen before. There was also Pip-Boy, the series’ iconic mascot, featured prominently on posters.

In terms of official images, we’ve got a look at the tv show fairly recently.

As we can see here, the Vault seems to be 33. A dead body can be roughly seen just to the left of a recently opened vault door. Set photos of outdoor filming for the Fallout TV show have revealed a bit more about the game.

Leaked shots have shown a set of power armor under construction at one of the sets. It definitely looked to scale too.

For now though, it looks like the adaptation is going to feature a world pretty close to the immersive post-nuclear setting of the Fallout RPG. With the great talent on board, it’s looking like a great entry in video game adaptations.
