There are not many MMOs that have as much hype behind them as Blue Protocol. The upcoming multiplayer extravaganza from Bandai Namco and their Project Sky Blue team includes some of the brilliant minds behind Scarlet Nexus and even Final Fantasy XIV.

The game has already been released in Japan to great success and a Western, English port seems to be right around the corner thanks to the publishing efforts of Amazon games. After the recently wrapped network test, we've compiled everything you need to know about Blue Protocol.

What is Blue Protocol?

It's an MMORPG made by Bandai Namco, publisher of many licensed anime games, Tekken, Tales of, Pac-Man, and much much more. It promises to be what you might expect a modern, cutting-edge MMORPG to look like on modern consoles.

Breathtaking vistas, a robust, fast-paced combat system that still features the group dynamics and epic raids you usually find in MMOs all under the guise of a fantasy anime RPG. It sounds like a lot but if what we've seen on Japanese streams and in playtests is anything to go by, it plays exactly what you'd think a World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XIV would be like if made without technical limitations.

While the anime aesthetic may not be for everyone, everything about it looks fantastic and previews have been extremely positive.

Outside of combat, questing, and exploring the huge open world, players will also be able to gather and trade materials in order to craft better equipment to keep up with the ever-increasing challenge.

Blue Protocol Release Date

The game was first released in Japan in June 2023 as a free-to-play MMORPG. While there isn't a concrete timespan for a western release, the team at Bandai Namco has targeted a release window sometime in 2024.

It's however still up in the air if we get the newest version of the game in English, or if the patch cycle will remain behind or slowly catch up to the Japanese one. We'll of course keep you updated as more information becomes available.

Is Blue Protocol Free to Play?

Yes, Blue Protocol is a free-to-play MMORPG. The does however feature a cash shop that allows you to speed up your progression, try to roll for special cosmetics as well as upped success rates for crafting. the game will also feature a battle pass in both a premium and free version.

We can't however say for certain yet, how these prices and items will translate into the Western release which is handled by Amazon as the legal situation for this kind of itemization and prizes is very different in Europe and the US.

Blue Protocol Gameplay

As for Gameplay, Blue Protocol plays like an Action RPG similar to something like a Black Desert or the Tales of -games the team previously worked on. It still features your usual MMORPG quirks, like ground AOEs and mechanics you'll have to dodge but all of this happens in real time.

Add to that a fast-paced combat system that has you dodge roll attacks that have to physically hit you as well as combos and mighty abilities across currently 5 different combat classes and you have a of ground to cover.

You will also explore a massive overworld, complete quests, and follow a main quest while slowly finding your way in the world. There will also be instanced dungeons players will have to team up for in order to clear. And as previously mentioned there is crafting and, like any good RPG, the game also features a fishing mini-game.

Even in its current state, Blue Protocol is a full-fledged RPG and MMORPG which has garnered a lot of positive feedback from the player base overseas but it's left to be seen how the western release turns out.

Blue Protocol Story

The story of Blue Protocol takes place on the planet Regas, a world that was once ruled by a divine tribe that masted a mystical light. Now many years later, they left behind ruins of their once great civilization that harbors dark secrets.

The player character wakes up in one of those ruins and embarks on an adventure to find out their true identity and figure out how to protect Regas against the coming darkness.

Blue Protocol Platforms

Blue Protocol is going to be released on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. All of these releases are expected to be free to play and will most likely also feature crossplay between all platforms.
