How to get the Spear of Night in the Silent Library in Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3's unprecedented scale is staggering, but much like every D&D campaign, it is never short on deadly dungeon puzzles that hide untold riches and power. In particular, one popular dungeon which you'll find in the main campaign called the ‘Gauntlet of Shar' holds numerous challenges that'll pick your brain for a chance to get two of the best magical items in the game. With all that in mind, here's how you can solve the elusive Silent Library puzzle in Baldur's Gate 3.

Step 1: Defeat the Enemies in the Silent Library

Upon stepping through a shimmering entryway, the ‘Silence' status effect is applied on all of your party members. This presents a unique challenge wherein you won't be able to cast spells with vocal components. That said, there's a quick and easy way to make sure you get to the end without any hitch.

Within the first chamber are numerous deadly traps which a rogue in your party can easily disable. Prioritize clearing your path to avoid any unfortunate incidents. Besides traps, an Umbral Tremor and a Justiciar also guard the silent library. Fortunately for you, their detection range isn't that good, so sneak closer to these targets for the element of surprise before the fight begins.

The ‘Gauntlet of Shar' is just one of the many amazing dungeons in Baldur's Gate 3 Act 1. Other challenges are harder to get to, requiring you to go to unfathomable depths to retrieve lost relics and restart ancient forges, one of which lets you craft your own gear using the strongest mineral around: Adamantine. Step 2: Solve the Nightsong Riddle in the Silent Library

After the fighting dies down, you'll need to disarm the rest of the traps inside the room, including the ones on 4 of the bookshelves. Next, interact with the northeast bookshelf to obtain a tome named ‘Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger”.

You will need to lockpick the iron portcullis ahead to advance to the main puzzle. Past that, you'll reach a risen slab which gives you a curious riddle. It will ask the question “What can kill the Nightsong?”. Answer this riddle by placing the ‘Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger” book from the northeastern bookshelf onto the plinth. Doing so will activate the mechanism which opens the treasure room.

Step 3: Claim Your Rewards

Within the storage room, you'll find the Dark Justiciar Helmet and the Spear of Night.

Dark Justiciar Helmet

  • +1 to saves against spells
  • +1 to CON saves
  • While you're hidden, the number to roll a critical hit is reduced by 1 (19 at most)

Spear of Night

  • 3-10 Piercing damage
  • +1 to Attack and Damage rolls
  • Lets you kill ‘Nightsong'

Conclusion

To complete the Silent Library puzzle, prioritize disabling all of the traps in the room. Afterwards, get in advantageous positions before butting heads against the chamber's guardians. After the battle ends, scan the northeast shelves for the ‘Teachings of Loss: The Nightsinger” book, which you'll need later. Picking the gate's lock (preferably with Thieves Tools) will lead you to the small altar which presents a riddle. Placing the book atop the plinth will open the doors to the treasure room.
