Valheim Ashlands Trailer Showcases Dangerous New Biome

Listing the biggest reveals in the Valheim Ashlands Gameplay reveal, which will mark the three-year old game's penultimate biome.

Coffee Stain and Iron Gate Studio unveiled the first gameplay trailer for the Ashlands update, and it had more than a few reveals in its short but sweet one minute and 24 seconds runtime.

It's almost been a year since the first images of Valheim's 8th realm were released, and now we've finally gotten an extended look at what the Ashlands has in store, and it doesn't look like a walk in the park.

As expected, Valheim's “land of the dead” will be the hardest challenge in the game. The devs at Iron Gate Studio even released an FAQ primer beforehand to set player expectations, stating that “Valheim is meant to be a difficult game, and that it’s meant to be more difficult the further you progress – and the Ashlands is the penultimate biome of the game.”

Here's everything that was revealed in the Valheim Ashlands gameplay trailer.

A Land of Fire

The Ashlands is an extremely hostile biome found south of the map. This volcanic region is spread in a wide crescent shape, and is surrounded on all sides by water, separating it from the rest of the map.

The gameplay trailer gave us a closer look at the Ashlands, which feature formidable enemy fortressess, ancient ruins and rivers of molten lava.

Thankfully, we'll be getting bubbled areas to build our structures in. Though the trailer didn't exactly show if these areas would be totally impervious to enemy raids. It sure beats having to rely on a teleporter the whole time.

On top of that, a new item in the Ashlands will let us spawn small platforms when thrown into the lava to make exploration less of a nightmare.

New Creatures

A new biome isn't without nasty inhabitants that want to put an end to your (after)life.

The skeletal armies of the Ashlands aren't just made of the surtlings we've seen in previews past. The gameplay trailer featured a few more foes to look out for, including a flaming skeletel troll, a giant undead vulture and a zombie Serpent.

Thankfully, the boss drops we got from the Queen back in the Mistlands will grant us new recipes in the public testing realm, giving us sturdier armor to brave the Ashlands' fiery crucible.

New Gear

Speaking of armor, the new Ashlands gameplay trailer briefly showed the new “Flametal” gearset, which included the most metal Valheim armor we've seen in a long time. Peep the Flametal sword's sick red, flowing aura.

New Boss

Valheim's next mainline boss was mysteriously absent in the Ashlands gameplay trailer, with the final scene of a green, glowing grave being a potential clue to their whereabouts.

Valheim bosses are extremely powerful deities spread across the 7 different biomes. Fighting them usually requires a summoning ritual, but it's uncertain whether or not the Ashlands' biggest bad will follow the same routine.

Siege Gameplay

Huge battering rams and catapults were showcased in the Valheim Ashlands gameplay trailer. While this has been revealed by early playtesters for quite some time now, it's still a sight to see them working in game.

It'll be awesome to lead a four-man siege with your friends in Valheim, but the true goal of these expeditions remain unknown. But considering that boss summons usually need hard-to-get components, it's safe to assume that we'll be busting down doors to get the next set of materials.

New Mount

The hot, obsidian isles of the Ashlands are no place for the slow-moving Lox, so we're getting a new mount!

These creatures seem to mimic the typical Wargs seen in most fantasy games. From what we saw in the trailer, these steeds will be fast, agile and aggressive; three things you'll want to  in Valheim's hardest biome.
