After six long years in the European League scene, both EU LCS and LEC, Misfits are saying goodbye to their fans after one last split as Team Heretics step into their spot.
It was initially reported yesterday, by Eros, that the North America-based organization was set to sell its spot in the premier European league. While there were multiple candidates for the spot, the front-runner reported was the LVP member Team Heretics.
We didn’t have to wait too long for an official announcement, as the official Twitter page for Team Heretics just posted a statement about the news where they confirmed the sale. The actual buy-out is closer to €34-36M, the previously rumored number was near to €50M, which is much closer to what Schalke 04 got from BDS for their slot. The handover will take effect after the current split ends, and Team Heretics will play their first LEC season with the start of the 2023 Spring Split.

LEC is not the only league Misfits will be leaving, as this Summer will also be the last split for Misfits Premier, who is competing in the LFL. In a press release, Misfits co-founder and CEO Ben Spoont said that the decision wasn’t made lightly and: “…[they] ran an exhaustive process vetting numerous interested offer parties and came to the decision that Team Heretics was the right selection to continue on as responsible stewards of the league.”
Who are Team Heretics
Team Heretics is a Spanish esports organization founded in August 2016 by the Spanish YouTuber Jorge ‘Goorgo’ Orejudo. They have teams competing in other esports like CS:GO, Call of Duty and Valorant. Heretics first entered the League of Legends scene in January 2017, but their rise to the public spotlight and popularity started in late 2021. In November 2021, Heretics were invited to LVP SL 2nd Division and just a month later they acquired the LVP spot of Cream Real Betis.
After a rough first split where they finished eight during Spring 2022, they quickly improved their team and as of now, they are tied for first in the league with just one game remaining in the Summer Split.
When both LVP and LEC end and it all settles, it will be interesting to see what kind of roster building will Heretics go with. Misfits currently have some strong prospects in Mertai ‘Mersa’ Sari and Joel ‘Irrelevant’ Miro Scharoll, and Team Heretics has probably the most prominent young ADC in all ERLs, Jakob ‘Jackspektra’ Gullvag Kepple. However, it is also widely known that the biggest star in the Misfits roster and the reigning LEC MVP Vincent ‘Vetheo’ Berrié’s contract will be ending after the Split. So it is expected for him to sign for a bigger team.
