With the Knockout Stage now fully confirmed, it’s time to preview those Quarterfinals clashes.
Gen.G v G2 Esports was a draw that stood out for LEC fans as a very winnable series for the LEC Champions. With a Semifinals tie against another LCK team, G2 would at least avoid their bogy region until the Grand Finals. Though it would play perfectly into the hands of the LPL 3-0 v LEC meme, providing Fnatic doesn’t surprise everyone and make it to the Final.
On the other hand, we have Gen.G. With a steller 5-1 record in groups, only a defeat to Fnatic made them not make it out of Groups with a perfect record. Gen.G is probably not the favorites, especially given that it will be LCK third seed v LEC first seed. Gen.G looked like a solid team in their Group Stage, though the loss to Fnatic (albeit in a best-of-one) shows a weakness in the armor of the LCK hopefuls. Equally, they’ll see G2’s less than stellar performances in Groups as a sign of weakness from the LEC side.
G2 had a decent showing in their group, despite two losses to Suning they showed that they are definitely deserving of a spot in the Knockouts. The big question will still remain: can G2 show the form of Summer playoffs or will their regular-season form spoil the party? Gen.G is, however, probably the draw and side of the bracket G2 and their fans would have wished for. They'll have many chances to get good games under their belts before they head to the Grand Finals. With their likely opposition to be an LPL side yet again, G2 will be keen to overturn that particular gremlin.
Prediction
I’ll be completely honest with you. As a European, I’m a sucker for the LEC win here. However, bias aside I do think G2 Esports are are joint favorites alongside DAMWON to be the winning side from the lower half of the bracket. I also think that given G2’s lack of LAN performances in 2020 due to COVID-19, a longer series might be what G2 needs to get rid of the cobwebs. Though I think they will come out victorious, they will drop games along the way.
Score: 3-2 G2 Esports
