League of Legends Will No Longer Be Available On Legacy Operating Systems

It may be time to upgrade your system if you are one of the players using an older operating system to play League of Legends.

League of Legends users who play on legacy operating systems have received some disappointing news with the arrival of patch 14.2. In their latest patch notes article, Riot announced they will remove League of Legends for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. This counts for all versions of League of Legends, including their auto-battler Teamfight Tactics. The changes will commence on February 21st (Patch 14.4), giving players just under a month to decide whether to change to a new operating system.

This decision comes as no surprise, as according to Riot, its League of Legends players do not widely use these legacy operating systems. The reasoning for this change is to maintain League of Legends stability and performance, meaning limiting the game to one Windows operating system should help Riot achieve those goals. If you use one of these listed operating systems and wish to continue playing League of Legends, we will show how you can update your operating system below.

How To Update Operating System To Windows 11

Firstly, before attempting to make the jump to Windows 11, you must first make sure your PC meets the minimum spec requirements to install Windows 11. Please check with this website here before installing Windows 11. Once you have ensured you can safely install Windows 11, follow these steps:

  • Make sure you have your Microsoft account setup, this ensures all of your apps and data is stored in one location and can move across.
  • Using your preferred storage method, back up all important documents and files before installing Windows 11. Microsoft has a guide on how to transfer your files from a legacy operating system here.
  • Head on over to the Windows 11 installation assistant that will guide you through the process.
  • Once Windows has given the okay, your PC will prompt you that Windows 11 is ready to install.
  • Click download/install Windows 11.
