League of Legends: Riot Games Reveals Esports Drops

Riot Games has revealed Drops for League of Legends Esports. The exclusive drops will become active ahead of the Summer Split.

Fans will be able to get exclusive rewards for watching League of Legends esports via the watch.lolesports site. Rewards include League of Legends digital goods and promotional products from brand partners. “Our goal is to continue to elevate the fan experience,” said Riot Games in an announcement today. Riot has run similar promotions around esports in the past, including the Esports Pass, which allowed fans to support a specific team and get rewards

This new round of rewards will begin to drop during the LEC and LCS Summer Split, with fans from all regions and servers eligible to collect rewards like skin shards, chromas, prestige points, and Clash tickets. Rewards will be dolled out when specific moments occur during a match — a Baron steals, pentakills, or a series going to the final game of the series. A new drops tab will be displayed on the lolesports website to allow players to track their progress and see what drops they’ve earned already. The feature is planned to be rolled out into other regions soon.

How will they work?

Here’s a rundown of the way drops will work;

  • To ensure that you’re eligible to receive drops, make sure that you are logged in to watch.lolesports.com with your League of Legends account
    and opted in to receive rewards and drops
  • If a Drop is triggered by an in-game moment, a notification will appear on-screen
  • To claim the Drop, you can click the on-screen notification or visit the drop page on watch.lolesports.com anytime afterwards
  • To see what Drops and third party rewards you've earned, head to the Drops tab on your lolesports.com Profile page
  • Finally, at launch Drops will only be available when viewing live matches

Over the past few seasons, the watch experience has improved for fans globally. With more in-game rewards, quests, and an improved (paid) viewing experience all now available for the LEC & LCS. As of now, we don’t know if this new drops feature is free or paid. However, the inclusion of branded digital goods likely means the feature will be free for now. Though, the likelihood of a “better” paid version in the future could well be a reality.
