Is FF7 Rebirth save transfer possible? Here’s everything you need to know about whether you can import your existing save to the new installment of FF7
Ever since the release of Final Fantasy 7 Remake on April 10, 2020, fans have been eagerly waiting for the next chapter of the story. Luckily, they won’t have to wait much longer as the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to launch on February 29, 2024. Apart from that, fans have also been wondering whether FF7 Rebirth will have a save transfer feature that will allow them to carry over their progress to the new title. Wonder no longer as this article will give you the definitive answer to whether FF7 Rebirth save transfer is possible or not.
Will FF7 Rebirth Save Transfer Be Possible?
No, the FF7 Rebirth save transfer will not be supported by the latest installment in the Final Fantasy franchise, unfortunately. This has been confirmed by game director Naoki Hamaguchi at a recent interview for PlayStation Blog who noted that the new game wouldn't be incorporating save files from 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
“We have announced that the Final Fantasy 7 remake project will be a trilogy and that each entry will be a standalone game in its own right,” Hamaguchi said. “Because of this, each game's balancing is done independently and a player’s levels and abilities will not carry over from one game to the next.”
Although this announcement comes as a disappointment for many, it is understandable as it would be a nightmare for the devs at Square Enix to balance everything from the previous game to the new one. They would have to take into account character levels, armor, weapons, and all the attributes players have gained in Final Fantasy 7 Remake and then incorporate them in a way that wouldn’t make players feel too under or overpowered.
What Can Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Fans Expect Instead?
Hamaguchi also quoted that, “We have created some special bonuses for fans who played the previous game, allowing them to start with a little something extra.” According to a blog post by Square Enix, it has been confirmed that if players have a Final Fantasy 7 Remake save file, then they will receive Leviathan Summon Materia. And if players have an Episode Intermission save data on their PS5, then they will receive Summon Materia.
Apart from that, Square Enix have also gone on a heavy promotion spree for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Their latest campaign involved a collaboration with Apex Legends, the highly popular Battle Royale made by Respawn Entertainment. The event involved letting players get their hands on the Buster Sword, new skins inspired by FF7 Rebirth, unique Materia with varying effects that can be picked up by players, an updated collaboration event store, and much more!
The aforementioned Playstation Blog post also mentions that there will be new Materia in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth that was not present in the previous game, Red XIII will be playable and will have a new “revenge gauge” mechanic, and a plethora of new mini-games for players to enjoy.
Should You Play FF7 Remake Before Playing FF7 Rebirth?
Yes, you should definitely play Final Fantasy 7 Remake before playing Rebirth. That way, you will be caught up with everything that has happened previously before stepping into the next chapter of Final Fantasy 7.
However, it is not compulsory to play the prequel before booting up the next installment of the game. Co-director Motomu Toriyama has said, “We have made preparations so that players who did not get a chance to play the first game can fully enjoy Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.” So, even if you haven’t played the first game, you should be good to go.
It looks like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will be loaded with plenty of content for players to enjoy, promising an expansive open world, plenty of side quests, a meaty storyline to sink into, and loads more. Even though it is a bit disappointing that your progression in FF7 Remake won’t be carried over, fans still have a lot to look forward to!
