Epic Games Store Holiday Free Game Giveaway Event: Final Day

It's that time of year when the Epic Games Store spreads a little Christmas cheer; the Epic Games Store Holiday Sale is live, and with it comes free games; 17 of them, to be exact!

Epic Games appears to be doing things differently this year. While they have announced the Holiday Sale and everything that comes with it, it seems like they're not officially hosting a 15 Days of Free Games Event like they did last year and in 2021. 

That's not to say there won't be plenty of free games for gamers to pick up because the announcement confirmed that there will be 17. And Epic Games is starting with a strong one.

Epic Games Store 2023 Holiday Sale Free Game Giveaway Week 1: Destiny 2: Legacy Collection

The first free game of the Epics Games Store Holiday Sale Free Game Giveaway is Destiny 2: Legacy Collection.

Destiny 2 has seen better days. After the shocking layoffs of senior Bungie staff, including developers integral to the Destiny franchise, fans en mass canceled their pre-orders of The Final Order in protest. But that speaks more of how they feel about Bungie, not Destiny 2 itself. 

Destiny 2 has been going strong for over six years now. While the base game has been free for a while, the Legacy Collection includes the Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen expansions. $60 worth of content for a total of $0. Not too shabby. 

Destiny 2: Legacy Collection isn't the only freebie now up for grabs. There are also eight cosmetics for various games that gamers can get their hands on.

Epic Games Store 2023 Holiday Sale Free Game Giveaway Day 2: DNF Duel

The next Epic Games Store Holiday Free Game Giveaway Event is here, and Epic Games has thrown us a curveball.

Gamers had a week to claim the first free game from the Epic Games Store Holiday Free Game Giveaway Event in the Destiny 2: Legacy Collection, but Epic Games has now switched to a 24-hour format that will continue until the end of the event on January 4.

The first 24-hour freebie up for grabs is DNF Duel. Released in July 2022, many compare it to Guilty Gear due to graphical similarities. Both 8ing and Arc System Works are developers for DNF Duel, but it feels more like an 8ing fighting game than an ASW one.

DNF Duel has yet to make it to the main stage of EVO, but DNF Duel does have Community Showcases, and it also made appearances this year at notable FGC tournaments like East Coast Throwdown, CEOtaku, and the ARC World Tour 2022 Finals, where it had a pretty massive $100K prize pool.

DNF Duel stands out as being pretty newbie-friendly. Mashing buttons won't get you far competitively in fighting games, but DNF Duel is a game most people can people up and immediately have a blast with.

Epic Games Store 2023 Holiday Sale Free Game Giveaway Day 3: Melvor Idle

Day 3 of the Epic Games Store Holiday Free Game Giveaway Event is here, and Runescape fans will probably enjoy this one. Today's giveaway is Melvor Idle.

Inspired by Runescape and designed by Jagex, you can very much consider Melvor Idle to be Runescape except in 2D and with traditional idle game mechanics. Idle games have received a bad rap over the years due to the endless stream of bad idle browser MMOs and mobile games, but given this is a Jagex game, you can feel a little more confident about this idle experience.

Runescape players will feel right at home with the leveling system, skills, weapons, and armor. You can customize your town, purchase livestock, expand your workshop, explore dungeons, and more.

One of the most popular titles from this year's Steam Next Fest events is Japanese Drift Master, demonstrating that the racing genre's popularity is still going strong.

Japanese Drift Master still has no release date, but Epic Games is giving you some free drifting goodness today in Art of Rally.

Developed by the team behind Absolute Drift, Art of Rally focuses on rally car racing. With beautifully stylized graphics, over 50 cars to choose from that span several decades, and 78 stages to race on, Art of Rally has plenty to keep you busy. Art of Rally employs real rally car handling techniques, like the Scandinavian flick and counter steering, so fans of more “realistic” racing games will appreciate this.

Delivering gifts to everyone worldwide in one day is no easy feat, so no one can blame Santa for enlisting some helpers to assist him. Epic Games is one such helper. Santa dropped one big bag of gifts under the Christmas tree at Epic Games headquarters for Epic Games to give us all today: free copies of The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition!

Starfield is Bethesda's first original IP in many years, but despite the massive hype, the reception for Bethesda's space epic is mixed. Cat Quest received Mobile Game of the Year nominations in 2017 and is generally well-received. It's a lighthearted, simple, and fun little experience.

Epic Games is keeping up the trend of animal-based games with Day 11's giveaway game Snakebird Complete.

Snakebird Complete contains the original Snakebird and Snakebird Primer. Developed by Noumenon Games, the Snakebird series is all about solving puzzles.

More than 120, to be exact. You'll also be eating lots of fruit along the way.

Snakebird Primer is Snakebird on easy mode and is a great way for players new to Snakebird or puzzle-solving games in general to the general.

Epic Games Store 2023 Holiday Sale Free Game Giveaway Day 12: Saints Row Reboot

Today's giveaway is definitely the most controversial of this year's holiday giveaway event: it's the reboot of Saints Row.

Saints Row 2022 doesn't have the best reputation. That might be the understatement of the year. Plagued with numerous significant technical issues at launch and criticized for poor writing and humor, Saints Row 2023 is in many ways the polar opposite of the Saints Row game longtime fans wanted. It seems like the team behind the reboot didn't really understand what Saints Row is.

Adding fuel to the fire was the unfortunate shuttering of Volition Games' door by Embracer Group earlier this year. Many gamers hold the critical and commercial failure of Saint's Row as responsible for the loss of the 30-year development studio behind classic Saints Row and the Red Faction franchise.

But hey, if you're curious about Saints Row 2022 and want to try it for yourself for the experience if nothing else, you can do so now for free.

Epic Games Store 2023 Holiday Sale Free Game Giveaway Day 13: Ghostrunner

Many consider 13 to be an unlucky number, but not this 13. Today is the final giveaway of 2023, and Day 13's free game is none other than Ghostrunner!

If you like lightning-fast platforming and hack-n-slash action, Ghostrunner is your game. Released in 2020, Ghostrunner is not for the faint of heart, as everyone, both the player and enemies, dies in one hit. It feels like one part Mirror's Edge, one part Supahot, one part Dishonored. It's a frantic but exciting adventure from start to finish, and you'll feel accomplished if you manage to beat it. 

Today's giveaway is the Original Edition of Ghostrunner, not the Complete Edition. There appears to be no way to upgrade to the Complete Edition for a discounted price on Epic Games, either. If you want to play Ghostrunner's DLC content, you'll have to purchase them separately.

A sequel, Ghostrunner 2, came out in late October this year and is currently on sale on Epic Games.

Set in France during the Hundred Years' War, A Plague Tale: Innocence stars Amicia de Rune and her sick brother Hugo. Pursued by Inquisition soldiers, Amicia and Hugo must evade them and hordes of rats carrying the black plague as they struggle to survive.

But, surprising everyone, Guardians of the Galaxy was a fun game, carried by its narrative.
