Best Aatrox Counters in LoL
Malphite
Although it may seem unlikely, Malphite is actually one of the best counters into Aatrox in League of Legends. The laning phase does not go as badly for Malphite as people would expect. Mana control is vital in this matchup because Malphite has high mana cost abilities, which will put him at a disadvantage if Aatrox is able to whittle down your health bar. Try not to use Q too much if your mana is getting low, this is the highest cost ability and you will want to use it if he lands his W onto you as you can quickly move out of the box. Since Malphite does not have great pushing power against Aatrox, the wave is likely going to be closer to your tower, which is the best case scenario. Even with his E, ultimate and flash, Aatrox would find it hard getting away from your engage if you have a jungler to come and assist. Simply wait for him to burn his abilities before using your ultimate on him to guarantee the kill.
Wukong
Although Wukong only recently became a more viable top laner again, he has quickly risen as one of the better counters to Aatrox, with the second-highest win rate against him, according to Mobalytics. Not only is Wukong a solid laner, one that is very hard to lock down and gank, but he is also an excellent team fighter and a great split pusher, making him an all-around excellent choice for a champion. Although it is better to play more towards your tower, Wukong can play up the lane if you play it right. Whenever he looks to throw his W out, you can use your clone to block the damage. Same with his Q, you shouldn’t have too many problems dodging out his abilities. It only becomes a problem if he can lock you down, as you don;t have many quick means of escape as he is also quick.
Irelia
Irelia is one of the most intimidating champions to play against in League of Legends. For Aatrox, this is a very hard match-up to play into. Simply due to Irelia’s ability to dash around from minion to minion before Aatrox can land one ability. Once you can stack your passive up to full, you should look to engage, Aatrox will not be able to deal with the damage you are outputting and at the speed you are doing it. Once he uses his dash, you should be looking to stun him as he has no escape from you. The key in this match up for Irelia is to play around the minions, keep them stacked and preferably near your tower, he won’t be quick enough to escape if you engage with your ultimate. If you really want to have insane early game pressure, then take ignite instead of Teleport or Flash.
Worst Champions To Pick Into Aatrox In League of Legends
Sion is arguably the worst champion to can pick into Aatrox. Sion’s Q can easily be countered with virtually all three of Aatrox’s abilities. Although Sion has his strengths, players can get baited in quite easily. If you feel safe and not in danger of dying, let Sion hit his E ability onto you, as Sion players will often go in with their Q for extra damage. This is where you can counter his Q with your abilities and look to counter-engage. Most likely, Sion will ultimate away, but this has a long cool down and could prove vital in an upcoming team fight. Sion players naturally will shove the lane in with Q + W. This is good for Aatrox as he can run down Sion quite easily.
Although Nasus becomes a force to be reckoned with later in the game, early on, Aatrox has the advantage. Nasus is very weak in the early game and will find it difficult to farm early, as Aatrox should be able to walk up and zone him off of the wave. If you are allowing Nasus to go through, you have to slam him early. Don’t let him farm up too much; otherwise, the window for opportunity will slowly slip away.
