Here we'll try to clear any burning questions you might have about the Baldur's Gate 3 Launch.
Baldur's Gate 3 is releasing soon, and while we're all excited about the next video game journey into the Forgotten Realms there are some questions around the release.
No preload? Why is that? Can I carry over my save from the early access and can Steam, GoG, and PlayStation versions play together?
Baldur's Gate 3 Launch Frequently Asked Questions
We will try and answer all of these questions and then some here.
Can I use my Baldur's Gate 3 Early Access Save?
Sadly you can't use your Early Access save for the complete release of Baldur's Gate 3. The Early Access version is approximately 8 months old by now and a lot of things have changed since then. And while Act 1 is already pretty lengthy, you'll have to do it all again.
Larian Studio has advised everyone to make extra sure to disable Steam Cloud Save and delete their Save Files from the Early Access phase to avoid any crashes.
Does have Baldur's Gate 3 Crossplay?
Baldur's Gate 3 launches on August 3rd for PC, on September 6th for the PlayStation 5, and sometime in the near future on the Xbox Series X|S. Sadly you won't be able to play coop with your friends on other platforms via Crossplay.
The game will however feature local split-screen co-op on all platforms. So you just have to group up locally.
Baldur's Gate 3 cross-plattform progression
If you own Baldur's Gate 3 on multiple platforms, you'll be able to save and share the progress of your adventure between all platforms without a hassle. You simply need to sign into your Larian Studios account and it should work without a hitch.
Baldur's Gate 3 Multiplayer Explained
Baldur's Gate 3 will also feature an array of Multiplayer options. You can either go for the local co-op and play with two player characters, the rest being filled out by AI companions or you can take the action online.
You can play with 2 to 4 people online as long as everyone owns a copy of the game as well as a Larian Studio account. Crossplay between different platforms won't be possible though.
Do Baldur's Gate 3 Steam and GoG Versions Work Together?
Yes! If you and or your friend own either the Steam or GoG version of Baldur's Gate, you will be able to play online multiplayer together. You only need to be logged into your platform of choice and your Larian Studio account for this to work.
Is there a Baldur's Gate 3 Preload?
Unfortunately, due to the nature of its nature as an Early Access title, you won't be able to Preload Baldur's Gate 3 ahead of time. The game is a hefty 122GB large and most of the Early Access versions files will probably be updated.
You can find out more about the release of Baldur's Gate 3 here.
Do I need to Play Previous Baldur's Gate titles?
Technically, you don't need to play any of the other Baldur's Gate games. All of them are part of the larger Forgotten Realms campaign which is officially distributed by Wizards of the Coast, the publishers of Dungeons and Dragons.
But having a working knowledge of the lore of both the Forgotten Realms and Baldur's Gate will definitely help you on your adventures. While we don't know anything specific, Baldur's Gate 3 is set 100+ years after the events of Baldur's Gate 2.
GameSpot has a great summary of the Stories of both Baldur's Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2 up on their YouTube channel, which should give you a general idea of what is going on. We highly recommend seeking that one out.
And that are as many questions as we dare to answer all around Baldur's Gate 3. Please keep an eye on our features page for more content on the game as we approach the launch. You can find out everything about Races and Subraces here and learn more about the upcoming Twitch Drops here.
