100 Thieves vs Movistar R7 Recap – Worlds Play-In Stage Day 2

It's a Panamerican clash as 100 Thieves vs Movistar R7 pits two western teams against each other for their first series win at Worlds 2024.

North America's 100 Thieves squared off against Movistar R7 in a slugfest best-of-three series that left fans from both sides of the continent with bated breath.

100 Thieves had a good showing in their domestic tournaments this season. Scoring high in the early brackets, making a few deep runs, and dominating in the LCS 2024 Championship earned them a spot in Play-Ins – the first in two years.

Meanwhile, the LLA champs from R7 are giving it their all this year as the #1 seed in the region. But even when both rosters were lined with big Korean talents, their “Bo3” was the definition of a coin toss.

R7 opted in for a more dynamic botlane comp, and had a strong advantage on paper. But despite Summit's successful flanks, 100 Thieves was indomitable in this match.

The game started with a cool solo kill by R7 Ceo, giving him a 1k gold lead before the 8-minute mark.

Keine and co. kept the pressure in the cross-map and almost snowballed early before Eyla and River ran R7's support down. They reorganized for Herald, but the eye was in an awkward spot, resulting in a 5-2 score favoring the NA team.

From there, the LLA champs scrambled for objective leads. Quid and co. responded in kind, but would always get Summit in their backline. Fearing a team wipe from Jax's E, the NA roster was forced to back off repeatedly.

This pattern would repeat throughout the rest of the midgame. A disjointed R7 valiantly defended their base. But after a final push, 100 Thieves eventually claimed the first nexus of the series.

A much more solid comp came from 100 Thieves this time around, with Aurora giving Quid's team more room for error in tough engages. At the same time, R7 had a more aggressive comp; one they had to make the most of in the laning phase.

R7 Keine was the top priority this game, so 100 wasted no time focusing on the midlaner. Afterwards, some overextended plays from NA gave Movistar R7 a chance to equalize the score, funnelling all their gold into their Renekton.

What followed was a relentless back-and-forth between the two rosters, putting things on a razor's edge in the midgame.

By then, 100 Thieves had the range and the skill, but a single Shockwave from Keine would result in a wipe. Eventually, it came time for Soul Point which both teams were about to contest. But a quick execute on Quid motivated R7 to take another teamfight, and the second match of the BO3.

Quid's Vex pick was a smart move on his part that would let him protect his ADC while proccing her passive on the enemy Jungler, ADC and Toplaner. But the 100 Thieves midlaner couldn't be everywhere at once.

The laning phase saw R7 take the early game by a landslide, with 100 Tomo getting the first kill for his team at the 15-minute mark. From there, finding an angle was a constant struggle for the LCS team.

Each teamfight ended in a stalemate up until the lategame when 100 River found a way around Summit. The enemy Renekton already had Black Cleaver, Sterak's AND Dragon Soul, making him the hardest threat.

But an overextended play for their top tower and R7's focus on Jinx gave River the window he needed to start turning things around.

Quid and co. also found a Nashor buff to get more advantages. But with a big deficit and all three lanes wide open, they could only wait for the decisive team fight that ended the BO3.

  • Teams: R7 2 — 1 100
  • First Blood: R7
  • Game Time: 36:22
  • Gold: 73.7k – 64.3k
  • Kills: 27 – 16
  • Turrets: 11 – 2
  • Dragons: 4 – 1
  • Barons: 0 – 1
