For my DraftKings Fantasy review, I tested all of the game types, contest types, and platform features. By the end of my testing phase, I found that DraftKings is undoubtedly one of the best fantasy sports sites in the country.

These days, DraftKings needs no introduction. It’s been around as a DFS platform since 2012 and has become a household name. 

It has since expanded, adding a sportsbook in 2018 and an online casino in a few states. It’s currently one of the few publicly traded DFS and sports betting companies on the NASDAQ. 

Using DraftKings is easy because everything you need is shown on the homepage, including the most popular contests, account settings, and a search bar. This intuitive user experience is part of the reason why DraftKings is one of the best DFS sites in the country (tied with FanDuel).

DraftKings DFS Review: Sign-Up & First Impressions

Signing up is simple since DraftKings has made it as easy as possible for newcomers to join. I was able to create an active account in just a few minutes using the iOS app. I provided my email and phone number, which had to be verified via text to activate my account. 

I used PayPal to make my first deposit. The minimum allowed is $5 for any payment method. There’s a wide range of payment options, including Apple Pay, Venmo, debit cards, and bank transfers.

As a fantasy sports platform, you can draft players using a set salary cap and manage your roster. For example, if your salary cap for a contest is $50,000, you select players with their own prices and build a roster. 

There are several variations on DraftKings, which you’ll be familiar with if you’ve played fantasy sports on any other platform before. DraftKings’ game styles include: 

• Classic – 8 player lineups with a $50k salary cap, including Late Swap
• Showdown Captain Mode – $50k salary cap contest where you create a team for a single game
• Single Stat (Points) – Create a lineup of three players that’ll score the most 
• Tiers – Choose one player from each tier without any salary cap
• In-Game Showdown – Draft a showdown team for a part of a game
• Snake – Draft 7 players, and the draft order reverses each round 
• Snake Showdown – Draft a 4-player lineup with alternating draft rounds
• Best Ball – Draft a 20-player team in a slow or fast snake draft. Top scorers are the starters each week
• Flash Draft (NBA) – Create a lineup of 5 players simultaneously with other players in a timed game with no salary cap
• Short Slate (Tennis) – Draft a 3-player lineup 

Once you pick a game style, you’ll have lots of options in terms of contests and tournaments. Here’s an overview of what you can find. 

Cash Games

There are plenty of head-to-head, 50/50 contests and double-ups at DraftKings. These are the easiest games to win since around half the field will cash. 

You obviously won’t have any sort of top-heavy prize structure with this type of game, but they are great for beginners to get their feet wet and have a good shot at winning each time while they gain experience with building lineups and DFS as a whole. 

The field normally ranges from 2 to 100+ in cash games. They’re one of the best bankroll builders, and DraftKings understands this. That’s why they have a massive range of cash games to choose from at any time. 

Smaller GPP Tournaments 

GPP tournaments (guaranteed prize pool) are one of the most popular and highest-regarded contest types among fantasy sports players. DraftKings has plenty of them to choose from for any sport they offer. 

DraftKings’ small to medium-sized GPPs have 75-1,000 entrants, with around 20-25% of the field cashing. A minimum cash pays around 1.5x your entry fee, so if you entered for $20, you’d get $30. First place gets around 50-100x the entry fee. You can always view the prize pool structure in the contest lobby. 

Large GPPs

Some of the most sought-after tournaments are large GPPs, as they offer massive payouts to top finishers. The average size of these will range from 1,000 to 1 million players. The most common one is the Milly Maker, which normally costs around $20 to enter. 

It’s not uncommon for these to allow up to 150 entries per player, though some are simply 1x per player. These tournaments are super top-heavy, with often around 1,000x going to first place. These are attractive due to their huge 1st place payout, but with such a massive field, they’re more of a lottery than a contest. 

Bankroll management is essential to any DFS strategy, so be careful not to play too many of these if you aren’t seeing results from them. 

Multipliers 

At DraftKings, the two main types of multipliers you’ll find are 10x and 40x. With the 10x multipliers, the top 9% of the field get 10x their entry fee. With 40x multipliers, the top 2% will receive 40x their entry. 

Pick 6

Available as a separate app from the DraftKings Fantasy app, Pick 6 is DraftKings’ ‘pick ‘em’ style version of fantasy sports. Just like you may have done using PrizePicks, Underdog Fantasy, or Betr Picks, you choose an event and then pick ‘more’ or ‘less’ on a player’s projected stat for a game, such as Brandon Miller (Charlotte Hornets) to score 18.5. 

You create your ‘Pick Set’ by choosing at least two players, and the potential payout increases as you add more selections. You must get the required number of picks correct in order to win. 

The number of picks required varies depending on the contest rules and the number of selections you make. Pick 6 is a peer-to-peer contest, meaning you are playing against other players, not the house. 

However, one of the main differences between Pick 6 and PrizePicks or Betr Picks is that for Pick 6, all of your selections for one entry must come from the same league, such as MLB or NFL. 

With PrizePicks and Betr Picks, your selections can come from any league. You can make an entry with a selection from MLB and a selection from NBA, and so on. 

Another difference is that the minimum payouts for Pick 6 vary by league. So for the NBA, a two-selection entry will yield 3x your entry fee. But for WNBA, it’s 2.5x your entry fee. On PrizePicks, two selections will always yield a minimum of 3x your entry fee, regardless of which league you choose. 

Sports & Leagues Available at DraftKings

DraftKings offers 14 sports categories to choose from. This includes NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, PGA, NASCAR, MMA, COD, HUB, Tennis, CBB, Squares, LOL, and Soccer. 

When some sports are out of season, you can play simulated games. For example, when the NFL is out of season, you can choose from Best Ball, Madden Classic, or Madden Showdown Captain Mode. You can play contests based on a Madden Sim Game, which is not a real game but a computer-generated simulation. 

DraftKings is on par with FanDuel, its biggest rival, in terms of leagues and contest variety. However, DraftKings has a relatively new game type called Best Ball that isn’t offered at FanDuel. With this game type, you create a large 20-player roster and participate in snake drafts. The contest lasts weeks and is one of the most intensive available. 

DraftKings DFS App Review iOS Android

When putting together our DraftKings app review, we checked for user comments and any DraftKings DFS complaints on the App Store and Google Play Store. We even checked the DraftKings DFS Reddit thread to gain insight into how the platform’s user base feels about it. 

The average DraftKings DFS rating has been positive. The platform is highly regarded, and the mobile app is heralded as being one of the best of its kind. It’s clear that DraftKings put a lot of care into developing the mobile experience and keeping it up to date and as modern as possible. 

The interface is populated by promos, sports leagues, and recommended contests. Actions are smooth, and the overall usability is top-notch. It’s simple enough for any type of player to figure out. 

In the My Account section, you can sign into Discord and voice chat with other players. There’s also a personalized stat show showing you various metrics for your activity. 

There’s also a Scores icon at the bottom, which shows you the results of the day’s games in various sports leagues. You can view live results there or visit DK Live in a browser or the dedicated DK Live app. 

In the app stores, DraftKings Fantasy has an excellent average rating. In the Apple App Store, the average score for DraftKings DFS ratings is 4.9/5 from 540k ratings. On the Google Play Store, the app has a 4.7/5 from 178k reviews. 

It would be nice if they included Pick 6 and DK Live in the DraftKings Fantasy app. If you also use the sportsbook and casino, that would be five DraftKings apps on your phone. 

However, keeping them separate keeps the app size down and may improve speed and performance. 

DraftKings DFS Review: Deposit and Withdrawal Methods & Withdrawal Times

There are no fees for deposits or withdrawals using any payment method. The minimum deposit at DraftKings Fantasy is $5 for all methods except for wire transfer, which has a $100 minimum. 

The minimum withdrawal is $1 for all payment methods except check ($15) and wire transfer ($20,000). The maximum withdrawal is $100,000 for all payment options except for Apple Pay, debit card, Play+, and Venmo, which have a $25,000 limit. PayPal has a max withdrawal of $60k. 

I used Apple Pay to withdraw funds, and the money hit my account in about 18 hours. It’s one of the fastest payout speeds on the platform.

DraftKings DFS vs Competitors

Compared to FanDuel and Yahoo Fantasy, DraftKings holds up well. Each platform has its own upsides. FanDuel and DraftKings are similar in many ways, but DraftKings has one leg up over FanDuel in that FanDuel doesn’t offer Best Ball. 

Yahoo Fantasy is designed for players who know they want to get out of a fantasy sports platform. It doesn’t offer quite the selection that DraftKings does, but it’s got a dedicated user base that swears by it since it’s been around for so long. 

DraftKings DFS Review: State Availability & Legality

DraftKings Fantasy is available in every state except for Hawaii, Montana, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, and Oregon. If you live in any state other than the ones above, you can play DraftKings Fantasy legally. 

However, the legal age to play varies by state. In Alabama and Nebraska, the minimum age is 19. In Arizona, Iowa, Louisiana (certain parishes only), Massachusetts, and Virginia, it’s 21. In every other DraftKings legal state, the minimum age is 18.
