Activision is taking a page from their partner company Blizzard. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will be built to be an eSports beast. Black Ops 4 will feature enhanced teamwork mechanics similar to Overwatch in an effort to become eSports next big hit.
This year it is once again Treyarch's turn at things, likely the most popular of the rotating Call of Duty developers. JKap, a professional eSports player says “I think other developers besides Treyarch aren't as focused on eSports”. That statement bodes well for what's to come on the competitive side of the game. He also said “I'm really excited for Black Ops 4. I think Treyarch makes the best competitive games”.
An additional concern has been the lack of colours in previous Call of Duty games. A game like Overwatch has much better visual appeal due to the bright colour schemes. “I'm tired of looking at a gray gun. All the colors in [WWII] are bad. They're like gray — everything is gray.” says Donovan “Temp” Laroda.
Professional Call of Duty player Joshua-Lee “Joshh” Sheppard says “I think it's more like listening to us and understanding where we come from. ” talking about how Treyarch listens to feedback from their pro players.
Black Ops 4 Pre-Sale Success
A new WSJ article states that Activision is already off to an amazing start as Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is set to destroy Battlefield V in pre-sale orders. It may even surpass Red Dead Redemption 2 which is one of the most anticipated games of all time. Battlefield V is Black Ops 4 main competition and this year they will both be testing out the Fortnite/PUBG style Battle Royale mode.
Analysts believe that because of Treyarch’s historically loyal fan base, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will sell at least 19.4 million copies by the end of 2018. Their exact estimates can be seen below:
Black Ops 4 launches October 12, Battlefield V on October 19, and finally Red Dead Redemption 2 releases on October 26.
The Call of Duty World Championships, with a prize pool of $1.5 million, is streaming live here.
