After over a year-long waiting period, Spirit Walker Udyr rework is near to dropping on PBE.
In a Riot poll among the player base, the Spirit Walker Udyr was the champion chosen for a full Visual and Gameplay Update (VGU). The poll included four other champions (Shyvana, Skarner, Quinn and Nocturne) but Udyr not only got more votes than the other four combined, but he was also the leading champion in votes in every region.
The Udyr VGU team started working on the project in the Summer of 2021 with their first community update coming on June 29. Fans of the champion or players in general were excited about the VGU, but even with some sporadic updates, the project lasted nearly over a year. The latest update on Udry’s release date was from the Lead Gameplay Producer for League of Legends, Ryan “Reav3” Mireles. Reav3 had said on a Reddit thread the VGU was slated between the release of their new bot lane champion, which we now know to be Nilah.
While we did not hear much from them in the last couple of weeks, the wait seems to be over as Riot just dropped a full two-minute gameplay trailer for the new Udyr. In the video, we can see some in-game footage combined with his new stance animations. Unlike his current version of stances which are mostly named after real world animals like turtle, bear, tiger and monkey, the new Udyr’s stances look like they are themed after the demi-gods of Freljord. Animations inspired by Volibear, Ornn and Anivia can be seen in the trailer, as well as another non-champion demi-god called Ildhaurg.

While there was no release date confirmation with the trailer video itself, the expectation among fans is that the VGU will hit the PBE servers in August. If you are looking to try out the new and improved Udyr you can have a chance to do so as soon as next week’s PBE update cycle.
