Iran vs. United States: Match Preview
Iran got off to a tough start at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup. They failed to keep up with England en route to a 6-2 humiliating loss, and some thought they would be one of the first teams to be sent back home after that subpar performance.
But the Middle Easterns showed big resiliency by bouncing back from that loss and dominating Wales to get a 2-0 win. Now, Carlos Queiroz’s team will face their biggest rival on Earth, and not for sports-related reasons, so clearly, this means way more for Iran.
On the same note, the United States team’s performance was disappointing in the first game of the tournament. They put Wales against the ropes in the first 45 minutes but took their feet off the gas in the second half, eventually losing their edge and settling for a 1-1 draw that felt like a loss.
But Green Berhalter’s squad also bounced back in a big way and dominated England for most of the game. Still, they couldn’t bear Jordan Pickford and once again had to settled with just one point, so they desperately crave a win here to advance to the next round.
Players to Watch:
FC Porto’s Mehdi Taremi has once again introduced himself to the world. He’s posted 6 goals and 5 assists in 13 caps for his club this season and has been even better for the national squad thus far. Through 2 World Cup games, the 30-year-old has two goals and 1 assist, being involved in three of the four goals his team has scored.
Reports of a rift between Gregg Berhalter and Gio Reyna have once again put all the pressure on Christian Pulisic’s shoulders. The Chelsea winger has barely played for his club this season but has stepped up for the United States as their most prolific playmaker and creative star. He set up Timothy Weah with a beautiful assist in his team’s only goal in the tournament.
Best bets for Iran vs. United States
United States to Win
You better believe both teams have had this game marked on their calendars for months now. There has never been more at stake for either of them, and you don’t have to be a politics or history connoisseur to know that these two nations don’t like each other. And that also counts here.
But at the end of the day, talent could prevail, and the United States boasts the most talent of the two. Gregg Berhalter knows he’s on thin ice and could lose his job if he doesn’t make it to the knockout stage, so he could be forced to finally unleash his playmakers, regardless of how he feels about Gio Reyna.
Under 2.5 Goals
This game will be tough as nails. Both teams will leave everything on the pitch and put their bodies on the line on every single 50/50 ball. The game will most likely be disputed at the center of the pitch, with both defenses going hard and with some tough challenges and tackles.
The United States team has looked solid when in possession, but they’ve had some major issues getting the ball to their strikers. Going from Josh Sargent to Haji Wright didn’t do much to change that situation, so we believe this could be a low-scoring matchup.
