Seahawks vs Lions Week 4 matchup preview and current betting lines
The Seattle Seahawks have found mixed results at the start of the post-Russell Wilson era. The front office chose Pete Carroll over their veteran quarterback, and it seems like it wasn’t the wisest choice. However, they were due for a rebuild, so it’s not like they were hoping to be winners at any point in the season.
There have been plenty of questions in the offense and the defense has looked quite beatable thus far. It seems like beating Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos was their Super Bowl and it might take a while before they end up on the winning side of a football game again.
The Detroit Lions, on the other hand, have looked like a much better team this season. They’re fighting hard, and their offense and defense are significantly improved, although one may not tell by their 1-2 record. Still, they’ve lost those two games by a combined seven points.
Needless to say, it might still take a while before they’re ready to compete against NFC North foes. But for the first time in years, it seems like the Lions have a legitimate chance to win week in and week out, and they’ll make life tough on contenders.
Players to watch:
Geno Smith: Pete Carroll has raved about Geno Smith and stated that there’s no reason to keep holding him back. He’s ready to let him cook, which could either be very good or very bad — we think it’ll be bad. Smith has thrown for 717 yards with 4 scores and 2 picks and a passer rating of 100.8.
Amon-Ra St. Brown: Amon-Ra St. Brown is a superstar in the making already. He’s averaging an elite 11.0 yards per reception, hauling in 23 of 33 targets for 253 yards and 3 scores. And that’s with Jared Goff as his quarterback, which shouldn’t be overlooked by any means. He’s that good.
Week 4 Predictions: NFL Bet of the week on Seahawks vs Lions
Seahawks +6
The opening Seahawks vs Lions spread has the visitors as six-point underdogs, which only speaks volumes of how terrible the Seattle Seahawks have looked to start the season. I mean, they’re coming off losing to the Atlanta Hawks, perhaps the only team that was projected to fare worst than them this season.
The Detroit Lions have left a good feeling despite the 1-2 record. They’ve lost both games by a combined seven points and had legit opportunities to win both. In fact, they lost to the Minnesota Vikings on the very last play of the game.
But even though they’ve been better, their offense has been more explosive and competent, and Aidan Hutchinson looks like a superstar in the making, maybe asking them to cover these many points is a bit of a stretch at this point in their learning curve.
The Seahawks won’t or at least shouldn’t win this game. But we wouldn’t be surprised to see them hang on and make it close enough to cover the six points on the road. This is a winnable game by the standards, so we expect them to be highly motivated.
Over 50
The Seahawks vs Lions odds have this projected game total sitting at a whopping 50 points. That’s a bit of a shock to the naked eye, but it makes perfect sense when you take a deeper look at their numbers, especially when we talk about the new-look Detroit Lions.
Dan Campbell’s team is averaging an impressive 31.7 points per game. They rank fourth in total rushing yards at 170.3, and third in total yards at 419.7. Simply put, they can march up and down the field on every single drive.
The Seahawks boast the sixth-worst defense in terms of total yards allowed per game (408) while also struggling to put up points on the scoreboard (15.7 points per game). However, they’re coming off facing tough defenses in Denver and San Francisco, so those numbers could be misleading.
Seattle put up 23 points vs. the Atlanta Falcons and their numbers were quite decent. They had 23 first downs and completed over half of their third-down opportunities while also going 2-for-3 in fourth down. Geno Smith put up 325 yards, so we believe this game could easily go over the total.
