Seahawks vs. 49ers Week 2 matchup preview and current betting lines
Seattle and San Francisco had polar opposite expectations leading into week 1. The 49ers were coming off an NFC Championship loss to the Rams. The Seahawks came off a disappointing 7-10 season where they missed the playoffs.
Kyle Shanahan’s crew were heavy favorites at -310 on the moneyline against Chicago and Seattle was +230 against Denver. San Francisco struggled and fell 19-10 while Seattle upset Denver 17-16 and its former quarterback Russell Wilson.
Second-year starter, Trey Lance, went 13-of-28 for only 164 yards and an interception. Shanahan drafted him No. 3 overall in 2021 to be the future of the franchise, but it’ll be interesting to see how long the coach’s patience lasts. Jimmy Garoppolo currently sits behind Lance and signed a one-year deal with $6.5 million guaranteed including a no-trade clause.
Seattle’s defense did a fine job limiting the Broncos to 16 points but was fortunate they forced two fumbles from the one-yard line. Otherwise, it’s likely Denver would’ve prevailed.
Bookmakers currently have the 49ers as 8.5-point favorites on the spread and -400 on the moneyline.
Players to watch in the Seattle vs. San Francisco contest
Seattle
Geno Smith: The journeyman quarterback has played with four different teams throughout his nine year NFL career but seems to have found a home in Seattle. Expectations among pundits aren’t high but if Smith continues winning, Pete Carroll will keep him as the starter. Smith was efficient against Denver completing 23-of-28 passes for 195 yards and two touchdowns.
San Francisco
Trey Lance: The North Dakota State product completed only 46.4% of his passes against Chicago. Lance was highly touted out of college due to his dual-threat abilities. He’ll be evaluated weekly and could return to being the backup should he fail to win.
Our NFL bet of the week for the Seahawks vs. 49ers
ESTNN is giving gamblers two free predictions for this game.
Seahawks vs 49ers Spread: 49ers -8.5 @ -110
Despite the 49ers putrid performance against the Bears, there were bright spots. Its defense left off right where it did last season, holding the team to 19 points and making Fields’ life a nightmare.
San Francisco still has its offensive core in Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Brandon Aiyuk and Trent Williams. The defense remains intact, led by Nick Bosa and Fred Warner.
Running back Elijah Mitchell will miss 6-8 weeks with a sprained MCL but Jeff Wilson Jr. has proved last year he is a solid replacement. The Seahawks don’t pose too much of a threat with Smith as their starting quarterback. Seattle also lost star safety Jamal Adams for the year to a torn quad.
We expect San Francisco to get the ball rolling again and beat Seattle. The 49ers should also cover the 8.5-point spread.
Seattle vs. San Francisco odds: Rashaad Penny anytime TD scorer @ +200
The Seahawks’ pecking order at running back might turn murky after they drafted Kenneth Walker in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft. For now, the 21-year-old is slowly returning from a hernia injury.
This makes Rashaad Penny the RB1 and gives him a good chance to find the end zone against San Francisco. The San Diego State product sits atop of the depth chart as he did in the preseason.
Penny didn’t reach the end zone in week 1, but did six times in his final five games of 2021. During that span, Penny received less than 16 carries only once and also eclipsed 130 yards on the ground four times.
