Los Angeles Rams vs. Los Angeles Chargers Week 17 matchup preview and current betting lines
The Chargers will faceoff against their same-city rivals, the Rams on Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 4:25 p.m. ET and the matchup can be seen on CBS.
The Chargers (9-6) currently sit in the sixth seed of the AFC standings and have clinched a Wildcard berth. Brandon Staley and his squad are playing for seeding in this game as they trail the No. 5 Ravens (10-5) by one game.
The starters for the Chargers are expected to all play. Pro Bowl defensive end Joey Bosa will be activated for the game but is expected to be on a limited snap count. The former Ohio State Buckeye has missed most of the year due to injury.
The Rams (5-10) cannot make the playoffs but will play for pride and continue to test out Baker Mayfield as its quarterback. Should the former Heisman Trophy winner continue to succeed, he could see an offer coming his way in the offseason.
Sean McVay and the Rams are coming off a 51-14 mauling of the Broncos on Christmas Day. The Chargers enter the game with their chins up after dominating the Colts 20-3 on Monday Night Football.
Oddsmakers at BetMGM Sportsbook give the Chargers a 6.5-point edge over the Rams. On the moneyline, the Rams are +300 and the Chargers sit at -250.
The game total for the contest is set at 42 points. Bettors have put 99% of their money on the Rams to cover and 84% of the money is on the Chargers to win straight up.
Players to watch in the Rams vs. Chargers contest
Tyler Higbee: The 29-year-old tight end is second on the roster in receiving yards (576) and has also added 65 receptions and three touchdowns. All three of his scores have come in the last two weeks with Mayfield under center. Last week, Higbee recorded nine receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Justin Herbert: The Pro Bowl quarterback has kept his team in games for most of the season. Herbert has thrown for 4,254 yards, (3rd) 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. In two weeks he’ll play in the postseason for the first time in his three-year career.

Rams vs. Chargers Alternate Spread: Rams +10 @ -190 (BetMGM)
McVay’s men had endured a calamity with injuries to starting quarterback Matthew Stafford and Pro Bowl wide receiver Cooper Kupp. They had lost six-straight games before signing Mayfield who has willed the team to two wins in three games.
The Chargers are on a three-game winning streak but are keeping games close until the end. Of the team’s nine wins, only two have come by more than six points. The formerly San Diego-based organization is winning by an average of 5.5 points per game.
Staley’s team ranks 11th in total offense (355 yards per game) and is scoring 22.1 points per week (13th). On defense, they’ve been worse. The unit is giving up 342.4 yards per game (19th) and is surrendering 22.9 points per contest (21st).
The Rams boast the 12th-ranked defense in the NFL (331 yards per game allowed) and are surrendering 22.3 points per game (17th). They’ve struggled offensively by scoring just 18.7 points per game and are second-worst in earning yards (281.5 per game).
In their last six games against the Chargers, the Rams are 4-2 against the spread. The Chargers are 9-5-1 ATS this year. The underdogs have covered the spread in seven of the previous eight contests in SoFi Stadium.
Herbert and the Chargers still have seeding to play for but will be on a short week. At ESTNN, we believe a safer pick is to bet the Rams to cover an alternate 10-point spread at BetMGM Sportsbook (-190).
Rams vs. Chargers odds: Cameron Dicker over 1.5 @ -115 (DraftKings)
Last week, we recommended taking Cameron Dicker to make more than 1.5 field goals. Our pick remains the same this week due to how hot he’s been. The former Longhorn has made 18-of-19 field goals this season which converts to 94.7% (2nd in the NFL).
Dicker has made two or more field goals in seven out of nine outings and with the Rams having an above-average defense, there should be a chance for him to easily make at least two kicks.
DraftKings Sportsbook is offering -115 odds for the selection. If you’re interested in learning about more prop bets for week 17, read our NFL player props page.
