All game 1s from Round 1 of the Western Conference in the NBA playoffs are already in the books. More or less the results didn’t go with surprises except for the Timberwolves vs Grizzlies game. The Timberwolves despite proceeding to the playoffs via the play-in tournament, made an effort to upset the favored Grizzlies side.
The first battles of the Round 1 in the Western Conference are done. What happens further?
Phoenix Suns beat the young team of New Orleans Pelicans with 11 points difference. The deciding factor, who else but Chris Paul. This veteran superstar continues to show class despite his age. The “timeless” Chris Paul performed with 30 points, 7 rebounds and 10 assists in 35 minutes play leading the Suns team to new victory. If there are neutral NBA fans, there is not a single one that doesn’t cheer for Chris Paul to get his first ever ring. This is what the public expecting anyways.
Nothing new in Oregon. Golden State Warriors keeps playing with the style we are used to see in the past decade. Despite Steph Curry playing limited time, Warriors easily beat the Nuggets. Nikola Jokic, one of the three MVP front runners, only got help by Will Burton in the game 1 in which only the first quarter had interesting moments. Right after that, Warriors weapons were activated and the rest of the game was just a routine.
Dallas Mavericks lost the opening game of the NBA postseason by Utah Jazz. This is not a surprise if considering the fact that another superstar wasn’t playing. Dallas Mavericks fans couldn’t believe their leader Luka Doncic got injured in the last game of the regular season in a game that was completely not important. Still Utah Jazz are serious team, and they are as well mature to go all the way.
Phoenix Suns
A team that is the main favorite for repeating the last season Finals. Do they got what it takes this season? After failing short in the last season, and the historic win of Milwaukee Bucks, the Suns kept running in the same manner. Most of the team core was kept as this young team was kept improving. With a leadership of the Chris Paul and the superb offensive power they have in Devin Booker, a pure scorer with Mamba mentality, team can go forward. Keeping DeAndre Ayton, Johnson, Payne is also key, while adding more experience despite Crowder with a champion center in JaVale McGee makes them a favorite number 1.
Golden State Warriors
Well what can you say about these guys. Same coach, same trio of superstars, a team that plays recognized basketball during the past decade. With great additions as having their former Finals MVP Andre Igoudala, Andrew Wiggins, and another rising star from their famous “basketball” school in Jordan Poole make them another big favorite. If this team can keep staying healthy knowing the history of the injuries, this team can take the glory once again.
Memphis Grizzlies
This is a team that for a short time rebuilt and created a strong group of young guys that impressed the basketball world. Finishing second in the regular season in the West is really not a joke. However our thought is that this team is still young and they don’t have what it takes yet for becoming champions.
Utah Jazz
The Dark Horse. If there is a dark horse in the Western Conference this is the one. Utah Jazz was building with years and this team is playing together several seasons. Having a superstar as Donovan Mitchell as well as one of the best defensive players in NBA in the past decade, Rudy Gobert is a serious team with a contender aspiration. Still we haven’t seen a lot of them in the past season during the playoffs so if they want to have a long post season, they need to start proving themselves. Beating the Mavericks in the series would be tough but this may very well happen in their game 2 against Dallas.
What are the current outright odds to win the Western Conference?
Phoenix Suns -115
Golden State Warriors +290
Utah Jazz +700
Memphis Grizzlies + 850
Denver Nuggets +2200
Dallas Mavericks +2200
Minnesota Timberwolves +2200
New Orleans Pelicans +6600
