Detroit Lions vs. New York Jets Week 15 matchup preview and current betting lines

The Lions and Jets will step foot on the gridiron Sunday at 1 p.m. in a must-win contest if one team is to sneak into the postseason. The game will be played in the Meadowlands and broadcast by CBS.

Detroit and New York enter the game in similar but also opposite scenarios. Both teams are 9th in their conference standings but the Lions (6-7) have won twice in a row while New York (7-6) has lost back-to-back outings.

Dan Campbell and his men had dominating wins over Jacksonville and Minnesota. Robert Saleh wasn’t so fortunate and faltered against Minnesota and Buffalo in tight matchups.

Oddsmakers at Caesars Sportsbook give the Jets a 1.5-point edge. On the moneyline, New York is -130 compared to Detroit at +110. Bettors have put 51% of their bets on the Jets to cover and 81% of the money on them to win outright.

Players to watch in the Lions vs. Jets contest

Detroit

Jameson Williams: The electric wide receiver recently returned from an ACL injury he suffered with Alabama in the 2022 National Championship. The 12th-overall pick is a perfect complement for Amon-Ra St. Brown in the slot. Williams showed off his speed last week and scored a 41-yard touchdown (his first) in the win over Minnesota.

New York

Mike White: White threw for three touchdowns and earned a victory in his first game taking over for Zach Wilson (week 12) against Chicago. Since then, he’s failed to throw for a score and is 0-2. Saleh insists he’ll remain the starter but he’ll attempt to refind his form against Detroit.

Our NFL bet of the week for the Lions vs. Jets

ESTNN is providing bettors with two free selections for this game.

Detroit vs. New York Alternate Spread: Lions +3 @ -151 (Caesars)

The Lions were considered bottomfeeders in NFL hierarchies after finishing last season 3-13-1. It appeared the scenario would repeat itself after a 1-5 start which included blowout losses to New England and Dallas.

Now, they are one of the hottest teams in the NFL and have won five of their last six games. Their quarterback, Jared Goff, has faced scrutiny over his career but has been on fire since week 10.

The former Cal Bear’s season-long stats are also impressive.

Jared Goff Stats

Passing yards: 3,352 (8th)

Touchdown passes: 22 (1st)

Interceptions: 7 (T-5th)

Quarterback rating: 61.1 (6th)

It certainly helps the Cal product to have a plethora of weapons at his disposal including wide receivers Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams and D.J. Chark as well as a dynamic duo at running back: DeAndre Swift and Jamaal Williams.

Entering the year, many pundits saw Swift as the danger back but Jamaal Williams has actually been the more lethal of the two. The 27-year-old leads the entire league in touchdowns and has recorded 806 rushing yards (13th) thus far.

The Lions boast a top-five offense by averaging 376.4 yards per contest (4th) and 26.8 points per game (5th). Defensively, they’ve struggled and rank 31st for both yards allowed (403.2) and weekly points surrendered (26.7).

The Jets have a mediocre offense and have dealt with quarterback issues all year from injuries to benchings. 2021 No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson was benched for backup Mike White.

Saleh boasts an elite defense that ranks 3rd in yards allowed (301.2) and 6th in points allowed (18.7). It should be entertaining seeing one of the best offenses clash with a top-6 defense.

The Lions are 9-4 against the spread in 2022 and are 6-0 ATS in their last six games. The Jets are 8-5 ATS this year and are 7-3 ATS in their previous 10 bouts.

At ESTNN, we believe the game will be closely contested but with Goff holding the edge at the quarterback position, the Lions will cover an alternate 3-point spread. Caesars Sportsbook is offering -151 odds for the selection.

Lions vs. Jets odds: Jamaal Williams anytime TD scorer @ -105 (DraftKings)

The BYU product has been on a tear with his 14 touchdowns in 13 games this campaign. Williams also leads the league in red zone attempts with 41 rushes inside the 20-yard line (3.15 attempts per game).

Last week against the Vikings, Williams failed to break the plane. He’ll try and bounce back this week and has scored at least once in four of his last five outings.

Our pick at ESTNN is to take him as an anytime touchdown scorer at -105 odds on DraftKings. If you’re interested in learning about more prop bets for week 15, read our NFL player props page.
