Jets vs. Dolphins Odds, Spread, Preview: NFL Week 18 Predictions

Jets vs. Dolphins Week 18 matchup preview and current betting lines

The Miami Dolphins (8-8) still have a shot at the playoffs if they beat the New York Jets and get some help from the Bills against the Patriots. But this game really does sum up the mediocrity of the AFC East.

It is as if some things never change. The AFC East is ruled by an annual Super Bowl contender with a huge advantage at quarterback, and that team is now Buffalo with Josh Allen. The Three Stooges that make up the rest of the division are mired in mediocrity, and they do not have that crucial quarterback position figured out.

This is Week 18, and the Jets are trying to decide between starting Mike White, Zach Wilson, and Joe Flacco at quarterback. Worse, the Dolphins are deciding between Skylar Thompson, Teddy Bridgewater, and Mike Glennon. Tua Tagovailoa is not even an option after so many concussions this season.

With Bridgewater’s pinky injury and some awful interceptions on his resume this year, the rookie Thompson might be the best choice for Miami. We will see if he can avoid Miami ending this season on a six-game losing streak that will cost them the playoffs after an 8-3 start.

The NFL Week 18 odds have the Dolphins as a 2-point home favorite with a total of 38.5 points.

Players to watch in the Jets vs. Dolphins game

New York Jets

Garrett Wilson: The Offensive Rookie of the Year award still feels up for grabs after Wilson’s only had 48 yards in his last two games combined. He still has 1,014 receiving yards on the season, but a big 100-yard game in this finale to eliminate the Dolphins might be the final push he needs to win the award over Seattle running back Kenneth Walker.

Miami Dolphins

Raheem Mostert: Can the Dolphins lean on the running game to save their season? Mostert had 113 yards and a touchdown against the Jets earlier this year in one of his finest games. He has only rushed for 74 yards in the last two weeks combined after only getting 17 carries as the team seems to be making a mistake by pushing Jeff Wilson again.

We have two NFL Week 18 predictions for this AFC East rematch.

Jets vs. Dolphins Point Spread Pick: Dolphins -2 (-110)

The Jets vs. Dolphins spread opened with the Jets as a 3.5-point road underdog, but it has fluctuated everywhere from having the Jets favored to now being a 2-point underdog. No one really knows what to do with these two teams.

It comes back to the quarterback position and how little each team is getting there as of late. Mike White had some good games early for the Jets, but he hasn’t performed lately, and he is dealing with a rib injury again.

Thompson has not been an impressive rookie for Miami. He has thrown 74 passes and is averaging 5.2 yards per attempt. He came off the bench against these Jets in Week 5 in his NFL debut and it was not too disastrous for him. But he had two turnovers and the team lost 40-17 after coming within a made field goal from taking a fourth-quarter lead before things got out of hand.

Can Thompson be better prepared as a starter instead of coming in cold off the bench like last week in New England? We’ll see. The only time he started this year against Minnesota, he left early with an injury.

It’s just been that kind of year for Mike McDaniels and Miami. Way too many quarterback injuries. It does still matter who is under center even when you have the speed of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle to help you out. But the Jets have the corners to take one of those players away. Maybe even both as neither had 50 yards against the Jets in Week 5 when Thompson was the primary quarterback.

But you do have to like that Mostert rushed for 113 yards on these Jets. It was a much closer game than the score suggests after the Jets got to add two touchdowns on drives that covered a total of 35 yards thanks to turnovers.

The Dolphins were 8-3, they were a better team than the Jets this year, and they are still slightly favored in this one. Let’s give McDaniel some trust that he can figure things out in this rematch, and the Dolphins can get just enough offense to beat the Jets and hope Buffalo helps them out with the Patriots to make the playoffs.

Total: Under 38.5 Points (-110)

Spread picks in Week 18 can always be so tricky since you just cannot gauge the motivation level of these teams who have really nothing to play for.

This is why there should be value in betting the under in butt-ugly games like this one could be with the quarterbacks. Remember last year when the Giants ran a quarterback sneak on third-and-long deep in their own in the second quarter? That was a Week 18 give-up drive. The Giants lost 22-7 and head coach Joe Judge was fired the next day.

No coach is getting fired after this game, but the Jets have not reached 38 combined points in their last four games. Their defense is good enough to keep the score down and their offense is lousy enough to keep it even lower. The Jets have 9 points in the last two games. These teams are battling to see which one ends with a six-game losing streak.

But with Miami’s offense struggling down the stretch, it is a perfect matchup with the Jets for the under to hit for your NFL bet of the week.
