Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies Game 5 Preview
Expectations are that Ja Morant will miss the rest of the postseason with a bone bruise. Either way, the Grizzlies are a clear underdog here even if they did make the Warriors earn it the hard way on Monday night. The Warriors are also likely going to be without head coach Steve Kerr again as he tested positive for COVID just hours before Game 4.
Maybe missing their coach had something to do with it, but the Warriors did not look like the Warriors with terrible shooting from their vaunted guards. According to NBA.com, this is how the Warriors have fared on wide-open shots against Memphis in this series:
- Game 1: 10-for-21 (47.6 FG%, 64.3 eFG%)
- Game 2: 7-for-16 (43.8 FG%, 62.5 eFG%)
- Game 3: 15-for-22 (68.2 FG%, 93.2 eFG%)
- Game 4: 8-for-24 (33.3 FG%, 43.8 eFG%)
This alone does a lot to explain why Game 3 was a blowout and why Game 4 was such a grind. But if the Warriors shoot more like they are accustomed to, then that could be enough as the Grizzlies are not getting what they need out of Desmond Bane and Dillon Brooks to win this series. Taking out Morant just makes it even harder.
But the Grizzlies are 20-6 without Morant, and we saw how close they were to pulling off a major upset as a big underdog in Game 4 on the road. Maybe home-court advantage and the threat of elimination will spark the team to a huge win, but it is going to be difficult.
Common Questions for Golden State Warriors vs. Memphis Grizzlies Game 5
The series shifts back to Memphis, Tennessee and will be played at FedExForum with a tip off at 9:30 p.m. ET this Wednesday evening.
The Warriors are a 2.5-point road favorite, which was the case in Game 1 when they won 117-116. This line could still move a little depending on what the ruling on Ja Morant’s status is.
The over/under is set at 220.5 points, the lowest yet in the series after Monday’s 101-98 slugfest.
All eyes will be on Ja Morant’s knee soreness, but expectations are that he will be out for the second game in a row. Even more likely is Golden State head coach Steve Kerr not coaching due to COVID. Mike Brown, the newest coaching hire of the Sacramento Kings, will again fulfill head coaching responsibilities for the Warriors.
In NBA playoff history, teams leading a best-of-seven series 3-1 are 252-13 (.951). The 2016 Warriors, with a 73-9 record, infamously blew a 3-1 lead to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. But LeBron James isn’t walking through that door for these Grizzlies.
