Best Outright Bets

Rory McIlroy (+450)

The 4-time major champion is in a pristine position to end his eight-year major drought. McIlroy’s form this season has been excellent and he won last week at the RBC Canadian Open where he defended his title.

It’s extremely difficult to win back-to-back weeks on the PGA Tour let alone win a tour event and the next week win a major.  The Northern Irishman has done it before and is one of the few golfers in the history of the game to accomplish the feat when he won the 2014 WGC Bridgestone Invitational followed by the 2014 PGA Championship.

McIlroy has been criticized in the past for his wedge game and putting but this week at Brookline he ranks first overall in strokes gained putting with 6.32 and T1 in greens in regulation hitting 78 percent of them.

Medium Odds

Sam Burns (+2000)

We’ve seen Sam Burns hover around leaderboards and closeout Sunday victories with clutch putts as he did at the Valspar over Davis Riley and at the Charles Schwab Challenge where he beat World No. 1 Scheffler in a playoff.

Despite not winning a major, the 25-year-old certainly knows how to lift trophies, Burns has three PGA Tour wins this season and played well in his last major securing a top 20 at the PGA Championship.

Burns is in the top 20 for many of the statistical categories at the U.S. Open including hitting 69 percent of greens in regulation.

After carding a 71 during round one, Burns found his game and fired a 3-under, 67 Friday.

Sitting at three strokes back and around his pretournament odds presents good value at 20-1.

Justin Thomas (+5000)

It doesn’t matter how many strokes behind he is, when you see Justin Thomas sitting at 50-1 with 36 holes remaining in a tournament you take him. Thomas pulled out a miracle at the PGA Championship when he overcame seven strokes on Sunday.

His track record is too impressive to not sprinkle at least a few dollars on him. With 15 PGA Tour wins in his career and 10 top 5s in 15 events this season, his results speak for themselves.

Thomas’ last five U.S. Opens include the following results: T19, T8, MC, T25 and T9.

The 29-year-old is currently top 10 in both strokes gained on approach (+4.13) and in greens in regulation (72%).

If his putter can get hot and he keeps it in the fairway, he can string together two good rounds and be a dark horse winner at such great odds.

Top 5 Finish

Xander Schauffele (+250)

The X-man is only four strokes back of the lead and he’s playing at the major where he performs the best. He’s never had worse than a T7 at the U.S. Open in five attempts since 2017 and has finished in the top 5 three out of five times.

If you want an even higher-percentage safe bet, you can grab him at even money (+100) for a top 10.

Top 10 or Top 20 Finish

Brooks Koepka (Top 10 +150) or (Top 20 -110)

Despite struggling in his last two majors, Koepka is renowned for putting on a show and finishing at the top in majors. Especially at the U.S. Open where his last seven starts (counting back from last year include a T4, 2, 1, 1 and T13, T18 and T4.

The 4-time major champ can be found at practically even money to finish top 20 at -110 odds and +150 to finish top 10.

These are good bets considering he currently sits at even, five strokes back of the lead in a T24 after recording a 3-under, 67 on Friday.
