Dolphins vs. Jets Odds, Spread, Preview: NFL Week 5 Predictions

Dolphins vs. Jets NFL week 5 odds, preview and current betting lines

This match up is an interesting one with the sides both coming out of the AFC East. Rewind to preseason and the Jets were written off (including by us) as contenders for the wildcard whilst the Dolphins could only hope to make the postseason by nabbing that second spot. Well, here we are in week five and whilst you could make the argument that both of those things remain true, the backstory is certainly more interesting.

The Dolphins had a few people’s jaws dropping open as they went to 3-0 but their loss to the Bengals last time out feels like a real momentum changer. The 0 has gone. Tua Tagovailoa is out with concussion and there are some lesser doubts over the readiness of deadly duo Jayden Waddle and Tyreek Hull. Whether or not they make it onto the field will be huge for the Dolphins owing to the fact they’ll already be going with backup QB Teddy Bridgewater.

As for the Jets, they’ve posted a 2-2 record so far. That’s not amazing but it’s worth remembering they only won four games all year in 2021. One of those two wins this season came last week and, in many ways, it was down to the rear-guard. Admittedly, they weren’t facing a full strength Steelers side but, hey, that’s going to be the case here and it gives them a chance. Should they move to 3-2 by beating the Dolphins then we might have to re-evaluate the claim that a wildcard fight is beyond them.

Players to watch in the Dolphins vs. Jets game

Miami Dolphins

Teddy Bridgewater: Teddy Bridgewater isn’t at Tua Tagovailoa’s level but his display in this game will be key for the Dolphins. If he gets enough protection, he’ll be okay. If he’s left open, who knows. Either way, it promises to be interesting watching him.

New York Jets

Zach Wilson: Zach Wilson is back as QB1 for the Jets now and showed some real moments of quality last week as he threw 252 yards. An element of rust was still present too but that should have been shaken out now. Can he inspire the Jets against this under strength Dolphins side?

Dolphins celebrate: Patriots vs. Dolphins prediction

Our NFL bet of the week for the Dolphins vs. Jets match

Right, with the preview over let’s move on to our predictions, after all, that’s the main reason you’re here.

Dolphins vs. Jets Spread betting: Dolphins -3.0 @ -120

Our first tip for this game comes from the spread market and we are backing the Dolphins to win -3.0. The Jets have lost two of their last four games with both those defeats coming by a margin bigger that 3.0 points. Then you’ve got the Dolphins form; they’ve won four of their last five matches with three of those four seeing Miami win by a minimum of 3.0 points. On top of that, the Dolphins have won each of the last four meetings between these sides with all of those games seeing the Dolphins win with significant breathing space! In fact, if we’re being specific, the combined scores across the last four meetings read as 99-44; that is a spread of 13.8 points on average – with Tua and potentially others missing, we’re not feeling quite that bold! Stick to the -3.0 instead!

Dolphins vs. Jets odds: Wilson over 217.5 passing yard @ -114

We might be backing the Jets to lose this game but that doesn’t mean Zach Wilson won’t deliver some quality – the chances are he will. He is a top player, he is back in the Jets side and last week, where he threw 252 yards, he blew some of the cobwebs away as well. With all of that considered alongside the fact the Dolphins have allowed the oppositions quarterback to throw over 217.5 in each of their last three games, this bet looks to be good value.
