Dallas Mavericks vs. Golden State Warriors Game 2 Preview
The Mavericks were 3-1 against Golden State in the regular season, but that meant nothing in Game 1. The Mavericks had one of their worst shooting games of the season while the Warriors had one of their best despite the three-point shot not falling that often.
Perhaps the biggest problem for Dallas is too many three-point shots as the Mavericks are now taking over 50% of their field-goal attempts this postseason from three. They fired off 48 of these shots in Game 1, a season high, and only hit 11. Luka Doncic had arguably the worst playoff game of his career with 20 points on 18 shots, and he had three more turnovers (seven total) than assists. The game was decided before the fourth quarter began.
This was the first meeting this season where the Warriors had the trio of Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green together. While no one had a big statistical night as an individual, the Warriors played great team basketball with seven players in double-digit scoring figures. The Warriors moved the ball so well and got the easy shots in the paint that the Mavericks are not trying to create right now. The Mavericks shot 4-for-15 on plays where Green was the primary defender, including 0-for-9 from three.
The Mavericks win over 70% of the time in games following a loss, so this team has figured out how to adjust all year from bad performances. But this postseason development of falling in love with the three-point shot may prove to be fatal to the team’s chances in this series, because the Warriors just won by 25 points without even shooting their threes well.
