Commanders vs. Cowboys Odds, Spread, Preview: NFL Week 4 Predictions

Commanders vs. Cowboys Week 4 matchup preview and current betting lines

After being left for dead after an ugly Week 1 loss, the Dallas Cowboys have won two games in a row and aim for a 3-1 start by beating the Washington Commanders in the first game of this rivalry in the “Commanders” era.

But you can change the name, change the logo, change the quarterback, and Washington still looks like a demoralized franchise. The Eagles sacked Carson Wentz nine times on Sunday, which is a career high for him in a game. The defense, which is loaded with first-round picks, has not delivered at all either. The team is staring down a 1-3 start if they do not pull off the upset here.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys are being led by Micah Parsons, who is leading the pack for Defensive Player of the Year. Backup quarterback Cooper Rush is the second quarterback in NFL history after Virgil Carter to lead a game-winning drive in each of his first three starts, doing it twice this year already.

The NFL Week 4 odds have the Cowboys as a 3-point home favorite in this matchup. Wentz getting outplayed by Dallas’ backup quarterback would not be a good statement for him making it to 2023 with this team.

Players to watch in the Commanders vs. Cowboys game

Washington Commanders

Jamin Davis: The 19th pick in the 2021 draft, Davis has had three sacks over the last two games after registering one takedown in his entire rookie season. With Chase Young still on the mend, Davis needs to deliver a big play in this game if the Commanders are going to pull off an upset.

Dallas Cowboys

Michael Gallup: The receiver is hoping to make his season debut after coming close to playing in Week 3. He is a legit starter and would give the Cowboys a pretty lethal trio with CeeDee Lamb and the confidence Rush has in Noah Brown.

Our Best NFL Bets for the Commanders vs. Cowboys game

We have two NFL Week 4 predictions we want to share for this NFC East rivalry.

Commanders vs. Cowboys Point Spread Pick: Cowboys -3 (-110)

The Commanders vs. Cowboys spread opened with the Cowboys as a 5-point home favorite and it has come down to Cowboys -3 going into the weekend.

These teams last met in Dallas the day after Christmas and the Cowboys piled up 56 points and 400 yards passing. Cooper Rush even came off the bench and threw for 70 yards and a touchdown that night.

It won’t be anything like that again, but Jack Del Rio’s defense has been absolutely shredded by Jalen Hurts and Jared Goff the last two weeks. Rush looks like a competent backup and has thrown for over 200 yards and a touchdown with a win in all three of his starts. It is not hard to imagine him having success in this game, especially if Michael Gallup does in fact return to bolster the receiving corps with another weapon. The Cowboys did a great job to get their running backs going on Monday night as well.

Meanwhile, watching Wentz try to avoid giving up multiple sacks to Micah Parsons should be fun. The Cowboys have gone from leading the league in takeaways last year to only two takeaways in three games this year, but they are racking up 13 sacks, led by Parson’s 4.0 sacks. Keep getting pressure like this and the turnovers will come in due time.

But that matchup of Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence against the Washington line alone might be reason to take the Cowboys to cover at home. Go with Dallas to start 3-1.

Total Points: Over 41 (-115)

Division games can be wildly unpredictable, but neither the Commanders nor Cowboys are great enough teams to fully trust one to blow the other out. This very well could look like one of Washington’s first two games this season with a 28-22 score against Jacksonville and a 36-27 loss to the Lions.

It sure should not look as bad as 24-8 against Philadelphia, a game where the Eagles were bored in the final quarter and a half after sacking Wentz nine times. Parsons and company are definitely going to put Wentz down several times in this one, but it seems realistic enough for Washington to score around 17 or 20 points.

The Dallas offense may be getting a real talent back in Gallup, and Rush seems comfortable in this offense and hasn’t had a bad game yet. He could get Dallas to at least 24 points against a Jack Del Rio-coached defense that struggles at pressure and coverage.

In a game that could finish 27-20 or thereabouts, we like the over 41 to hit for your NFL bet of the week.
